This morning, I woke up to the news that Donald Trump was elected president. Am I surprised? No. Am I concerned? Yes, and I am not alone.
My Facebook feed has been filled with people so upset for the future. They are afraid they may lose their right to their body, lose the right to marry whomever they choose and lose the right to safely walk the streets. People are also afraid of` how this will affect our children one day.
These are all valid concerns. As citizens of the United States of America, we are all entitled to vote the way we want, but we are also allowed to mourn the result peacefully.
Now that the election is over, what happens next?
My hope is that after the mourning period, people will move forward in perseverance. Whether we like the results or not, it is a done deal. Now we must come together as a country.
I also hope Trump was sincere when he said:
Now it’s time for America to bind the wounds of division; have to get together. To all Republicans and Democrats and Independents across this nation, I say it is time for us to come together as one united people. It’s time. I pledge to every citizen of our land that I will be president for all Americans, and this is so important to me.
I truly pray he will prove my expectations wrong. The American people need a president who will unite and support all citizens of every background.
The world is watching us.
Future generations depend on us.
Mr. Trump, it is up to you now.
