We have all heard the phrase "Dress for success" but it doesn't always have to pertain towards getting a job. When you hear the phrase, do you think business clothes, or simply dressing towards your style? For me, it's all about style and being comfortable, while also making a statement. Dressing nice means wearing jeans and a sweatshirt, or even a dress, if that is what I feel good in that day.
If I am comfortable with what I'm wearing, I will be more successful. I feel more driven and able to focus on my goals when I feel good about what I'm wearing. You will only see my in a frumpy outfit when I am super sick, which is maybe 4 times out of the school year. Here are a few reasons why dressing nice is the way to go, and why you should too.
You feel better about your outward appearance.
When you look good, you usually tend to feel good. Even when I am coming off a cold, I will still dress like I would any other day. It makes me feel a bit better, when I am dying on the inside. In society today, we judge each other by what we are wearing, and the rest of our outward appearance. When you think you look good, others might think the same.
Your professors will take you more seriously.
When you are wearing pajamas and falling asleep in class, your professors will think that you are there just for the participation. Class is not nap time. Dressing well makes it look like you are pleasant to be there, and that you are actually interested in the lecture material.
You won't have to change twice a day because you hated your first outfit.
When I took college classes in high school, I'd wear leggings and a baggy sweatshirt to class, then come home and change into a decent outfit, before driving to my high school. I wanted to impress my peers, like anyone else. Now, I partially do not care what others think about my outfits, be people are always judging.
By picking out an outfit the night before, you save time in the morning.
Even if I do not get it out of my closet, when I am laying in bed I will think about what I want to wear the next day. I usually think of better outfits at night, rather than throwing something on in the morning then being uncomfortable.
You will know how to dress when you get a job after college.
I'm in a sorority that requires business dress at meetings, but just knowing what is allowed in the real world is essential. Half of my closet is business clothes, and this certainly helps me when getting interviews and job offers. If you do not have at least a week's worth of proper business clothes, you may seen unorganized and not prepared for a future interview.
Dressing nicer can help you ace tests.
Of course, there is no science behind this, but when you feel good and comfortable, you are more likely to do better on tests and exams. You will feel better, more alert, and get to class in enough time to study a little extra.
