I thank the universe every Wednesday, for there is another episode of my current favorite television series, "Alone Together." This show is what I have been waiting for for a long time. I'm not much of a drama watcher, and I can't really get into overly obnoxious comedies where the show is trying way too hard to be funny. The greatest thing about "Alone Together," is that it doesn't fit into either of those categories! I cannot express enough how much I am living for this show!
For those who do not know what this show is about, it is about two young people (Esther and Benji) in a platonic relationship trying to make it in Los Angeles. I know the description I just gave does not make the show sound very entertaining, but trust me it is! The show isn't necessarily amazing because of the adventures or trouble the two characters get into, but it is because of their personalities.
I would describe the two as being relatable, sarcastic people haters who start out liking certain people, but then end up not liking them because of a certain situation...if that makes any sense. If I could use characters from other shows to help describe Esther and Benji, I would say that they are a mix of Abbi and Ilana from "Broad City", and Daria and Jane from the throwback '90s cartoon, "Daria".
I also enjoy that Esther and Benji are non-supermodel, or big-time people in the entertainment industry who wear flashy clothes; but seems to always be surrounded by people who fit into this category. I especially love that they know they aren't these types of people; even if they try to work their way into being a part of this type of crowd. I think that the way these two characters make fun of each other and themselves is an example of people being able to make fun of themselves without having it to mean that they do not like who they are.
To me, Ester and Benji are so confident, that they can easily make a joke out of their flaws and shortcomings. At the end of each episode, it seems that they just accept their outcome and who they are, and continue enjoying being friends with each other. "Alone Together" is just a funny 30-minute show (including commercials) that I think will relieve the stress anyone may have while watching it!
