New years is a crazy time, but also a refreshing one.
Christmas is now over, so you no longer have to worry about buying everyone the perfect gift and you have survived the awkward family encounters of Christmas Eve dinners. But if you are like me, you avoid the scale that shows you just how much you ate over the last few months, and you avoid looking at your bank account.
News years brings new hope for everyone. A fresh start. As much as I commend new years resolutions, I think they are kind of ridiculous. You aren't fooling anyone... we all know you aren't going to give up cookies just because it is January 1st.
I do love the look in peoples eyes though, the fiery determination that this will be the year you complete your lifelong New Years' resolution. However, over the next few weeks, the butterflies from the passion of the new year fade and routine sets in once again.
I wish we could have that fire all year round. Why should it just be at the beginning of every year that we are motivated to make a change? There are 365 days in the year, why are we set on only one to make resolutions for ourselves. If you want to quit smoking, or finally finish the painting you started, you should find inspiration in the amazing life around you!
Some people have accomplished new years resolutions, and to those I say bravo. I have set many new years resolutions in the past, and have yet to complete any of them, so I wish to focus on bettering myself all year. Every day can be a fresh start, not just January 1st. As much as I love the phrase "new year, new me" I want it to be: "New day, new me."
We make New Years flashy and sparkly, with the silent hope that the next year with be better than the previous one. But I am afraid to say that it is not something that happens by chance. As much as I would like to believe that all my wishes can come true just by making a new years resolution, that is not how it works. We have to work to get everything and we should work with fervor to achieve our goals no matter if it is January 1st or August 1st.
So I challenge you to make a new years resolution, but also make a May resolution and a September resolution. Be inspired every day to be a better person. In fact, if you work harder all year long at your goals, new years is even more rewarding because you can look back on the past year and be proud, not regretful.
