We let our little worries become mountains and let our little blessings fly by unnoticed. Life is really just a pile of little moments, with a few more important ones thrown in there. That's why it is important to find a peace and balance in the little things, and not let them overwhelm us.
It all started when my boyfriend and I were watching The Ellen Show. She was interviewing Jane Fonda, an 80 year old actress, who began reflecting on her life. She saw a picture of her 20 year old self and exclaimed, "Well I'm sure glad I'm not her anymore."
Ellen asked what had changed from then to now. Jane said she used to let the little worries become mountains in her way, but now as she got older she stopped letting them stress her out so much. She is much happier now.
My boyfriend looked at me, smiled, and said, "I can't wait until you're old."
"Why?" I asked.
"Because then you won't worry so much."
And then it struck me, why should I wait until I'm 80 years old to stop worrying about the little things I can't control? I'm sure I'll look back and think, That was such a waste of energy over a trivial thing.
We must carefully invest our emotions into what is important to us, so we don't become emotionally bankrupt.
Important doesn't always mean big moments, it also means the little moments that we cherish. It might mean stopping to enjoy a sunset, journaling at the end of the day, hitting our knees in church, working out, volunteering, or spending time with a loved one. The little worries in the back of your head will try to take away from this, so we must be persistent in our search for peace. We must always keep perspective.
What can you do today to enjoy the little things?
What can you do to get past the trivial worries?
Write it down.
Because before we know it we will be 80 years old and looking back on our life.
