All Night Longer

The stages of an academic all nighter

Welcome to Team No Sleep.

This is a breakdown of what it's like to stay awake All Night Longer on a school night.

This isn't your breakdown of how a night out is- where, at 11:00 PM you make the cold trek to the bars with your roommates and some cute guy buys you a drink around midnight, at 1:45 AM the bar lights flick on, and at 2:45 AM you're reheating pizza to absorb the alcohol in your system.

We're talking all nighter, with consequences of class the next day.

We're talking a test of your endurance. A night where your sleep schedule takes an L the next few days.

10:00 PM: I'll watch another episode

Yes, you'll be watching something already and Netflix will ask "Are you still watching?" and after some contemplation, you think another episode- just one- won't hurt.

11:00 PM: Scavenger Hunt for Motivation

Here we go, you recognize it's time to get to work, but there's one important thing you need to activate: your motivation. If you can find it.

12:00 AM: Small tasks

You only found enough motivation for the small tasks, which is a good place to start, I guess. And sometimes the smallest tasks seem like mammoth tasks.

1:00 AM: Multitasking/Another episode

I don't know about you, but I'm really good at watching something while doing work. This is pretty easy considering half of my assignments are designs and writing. So it's easy to multitask and watch an episode of something. So at this point your in a sort of "half-groove" where you're invested in both and you're not tired enough to stop now.

2:00 AM: Focus

This is when you hit your groove, you're totally invested in the (academic) task at hand. AND YOU ARE KILLIN IT. DESTROYING IT. You're getting stuff done and it's awesome.

3:00 AM: Giving Up....Almost

Then there's a point where you just want to quit. You're still going in some way, but you're tired and sad and just want to quit.

4:00 AM: Tired Eyes/Motivation Check

4:00 AM is the time where your eyes are getting tired and you get a motivation check. This is pivotal. You can quit and go to bed OR you can push through and finish the all nighter. JUST DO IT.

5:00 AM: Wrap it up

This is around when it's time to wrap it up. You're about done, and you're going to finish strong (I hope).

6:00 AM: Victory

Sweet, sweet victory. When you get done and you're free to pass out or take a shower or whatever.

7:00 AM: Sunrise, sunset

Time to pass out. Your evening has ended, even if the sun is coming up.

And then it's time to get up...

And then, all too soon you have to get back up and get back in the school grind.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.

Ever since I could remember, it was a treat to receive Easter Bread made by my grandmother. We would only have it once a year and the wait was excruciating. Now that my grandmother has gotten older, she has stopped baking a lot of her recipes that require a lot of hand usage--her traditional Italian baking means no machines. So for the past few years, I have missed enjoying my Easter Bread.

Top 10 Reasons My School Rocks!

Why I Chose a Small School Over a Big University.

I was asked so many times why I wanted to go to a small school when a big university is so much better. Don't get me wrong, I'm sure a big university is great but I absolutely love going to a small school. I know that I miss out on big sporting events and having people actually know where it is. I can't even count how many times I've been asked where it is and I know they won't know so I just say "somewhere in the middle of Wisconsin." But, I get to know most people at my school and I know my professors very well. Not to mention, being able to walk to the other side of campus in 5 minutes at a casual walking pace. I am so happy I made the decision to go to school where I did. I love my school and these are just a few reasons why.
