What Alicia Keys Is Teaching Me About Natural Beauty

Beauty is not defined by what you wear, but it is defined by what you project.

Women have always had a desire to please, to be appreciated. They pay so much attention on their appearance that some of them can not conceive to let people see them natural.

Makeup is a "must have" for a lot of women, and my opinion on that is divided. I believe that makeup is a great invention. It really helps reveal another aspect of women's beauty. It is like a house that you decorate with pieces of art to make it more appealing. Applying makeup can be considered as art. There are codes, and specific ways to apply it, and that is an art to master in order to look flawless.

My only issue with makeup is when women feel uncomfortable without it. Women shouldn't feel less beautiful or attractive without it. Makeup shouldn't be something that is absolutely needed. All women are beautiful with or without makeup.

The only time that I can understand a woman who cannot go without makeup is when she has a skin problem. If she is a public figure, or simply a "normal" individual, it is perfectly understandable that she wants to conform to certain standards. However, it should not be causing a self-confidence issue.

I would like to give a big shout-out to one of my favorite singers, Alicia Keys, who has now decided to go without makeup. She opened her heart in a letter a few days ago about her insecurities. She revealed that she was afraid of appearing without makeup, she was terrified by people's opinions on her image, but now she wants to face her fear.

This is a great example for all the women out there who feel unattractive without makeup. This new decision of Alicia Keys made me discover a new person. The "true" Alicia, without makeup. I can say that she looks amazing natural. In fact, her face makes her look very young. I have always admired Alicia, and I am so proud of her. She gives me more reasons to think that beauty is so subjective and that what society is advertising should not be what we automatically go for at the point where we are losing ourselves.

Women rely too much on appearance and not on other more important things like talent and personality. Women are amazing. The way they look does not define them. It is time to get in formation, and do a revolution. Women want to be accepted for who they truly are, and for their real self. Makeup is only the icing on the cake, and there is so much to discover in the cake. But most importantly, love yourself.

"To me beauty is about being comfortable in your own skin. It is about accepting who you are." -Elen Degeneres

Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.

Ever since I could remember, it was a treat to receive Easter Bread made by my grandmother. We would only have it once a year and the wait was excruciating. Now that my grandmother has gotten older, she has stopped baking a lot of her recipes that require a lot of hand usage--her traditional Italian baking means no machines. So for the past few years, I have missed enjoying my Easter Bread.

I was asked so many times why I wanted to go to a small school when a big university is so much better. Don't get me wrong, I'm sure a big university is great but I absolutely love going to a small school. I know that I miss out on big sporting events and having people actually know where it is. I can't even count how many times I've been asked where it is and I know they won't know so I just say "somewhere in the middle of Wisconsin." But, I get to know most people at my school and I know my professors very well. Not to mention, being able to walk to the other side of campus in 5 minutes at a casual walking pace. I am so happy I made the decision to go to school where I did. I love my school and these are just a few reasons why.
