Massachusetts country artist Alex Amato has released a few singles on Apple Music, Spotify, Pandora, and SoundCloud under the self-titled name Alex Amato. These songs, "Forevermore", "Wish Things Were Different", and "Too Good for You" all incorporate key themes and elements of modern country music by encapsulating light acoustic guitar, profound vocals, and excellent piano work. I would argue that this project that Amato has created showcases some of his best work to date, and that by doing so, Amato broadcasts great potential in the country music scene. At times throughout these singles, Amato will even deviate from his modern country vocals, and sounds like a younger Billy Joel, even though some of Amato's influences include Chris Stapleton and Josh Ritter. This change in vocal melody can be heard on the first track "Forevermore".
"Forevermore" begins with light acoustic guitar and mixes well with the elegant piano harmony that accompanies it. As the song moves further, Amato's tone of voice rises and drops while he sings about being so in love with someone that it drives you crazy, "You're the crazy that I never knew I needed". In this song Amato seamlessly moves between verse-chorus-verse-chorus-bridge-chorus which shows that he possesses the basic knowledge of song structure. This track was one of my personal favorites on the project because of the use of his backup vocalist Ally Rossi from the country band Southern Rain. Her voice packs an extra punch in this track and together their voices create a rich and full sound.
Track two "Wish Things Were Different" has a more upbeat rhythm and flow than "Forevermore", yet the lyrics reflect a sadness that comes with change. Amato sings "I know now that your world I can't be in it/I just wish things were different" to reflect this sadness, yet the tone of the piano and guitar indicate that maybe this change isn't really a bad thing. This was the longest song on the project at 3 minutes and 56 seconds, and the time moves by pretty quickly.
Finishing up this project is track three "Too Good for You" which is another song about moving on. "Too Good For You" opens with Amato singing with a light piano verse, which later incorporates an easy drum beat, and a smooth acoustic guitar. Rossi is featured once again in this song and her inclusion felt welcoming because she yet again added another strong music element to Amato's voice and guitar. Amato uses lyrics like "You wanna tear me down/cause I'm too wild and free/now I know it's true/that I'm too good for you" to show how change can be positive, and that you can free yourself from negativity. This song's lyrics were very similarly in style to "Wish Things Were Different" in that they both talk about moving forward.
Overall, I really enjoyed Amato's music on this project and hope that he releases a more diverse piece of music in the future. I would love to hear music from Amato that focuses on lyrics that diverge from being about change, or loss, and move more towards a story-telling way. I would also love to hear a more diverse range of vocal melodies and use of instruments from Amato, due to each song on this project sounding very similar to one another. I would definitely recommend this music to those who love country, but I couldn't imagine myself buying this work on vinyl because it doesn't sound complete altogether. "Wish Things Were Different" is a great example of this incompleteness because without Rossi's vocals, the song lacks the extra "umph".
