Sometimes break can be really great for catching up on the music that has been released that you wanted to listen to but forgot about because you had work to do, or something you listened to but didn't have the time to really appreciate. Below are my honorable mentions for great (non-Christmas related) music that are worth listening to when you have a chance.
1. SYRE; Jaden Smith
Most of the people I have told about this album have second guessed my taste because of the whole "It's Jaden Smith" thing, but you'll be surprised by how good it is. Listen to it in order the first time, and sit back and relax because it's kind of long (you might actually need a midway break), but it's worth it, I promise.
2. Nu Religion; Hyena; THEY.
Somehow this really talented duo's release managed to get overlooked by most people this year, so I am here to right that wrong. Their sound is very enticing due to their interesting vocal tones and production. It's worth checking out.
3. Freudian; Daniel Caesar
Of the people I know that have heard this album, only one didn't fall in love with it, and it was due to the transitional nature of the songs. It is another project that should be listened to linearly, as at times it can seem as parts of songs are meant to prelude the upcoming song. Regardless, it is beautiful.
4. Acid Rap; Chance the Rapper
Given how far Chance has come, I wanted to flash back to his past. A lot of his current fans didn't know him before Chance 3 (Or more specifically Life of Pablo), but I believe having knowledge of the genesis of a rapper's sound and skill is integral to appreciating their art. How can you really appreciate how far they've come if you don't know the distance they've traveled?
5. 17; XXXTentacion
If you can put the legal stuff aside, it's difficult to argue that Xxxtentacion isn't talented. I know a lot of people didn't listen to this album believing that it would be a collection of "Look At Me"s. I know even more people listened expecting a collection of "Look At Me"s, and hated it because they got something different. Either way, it's worth giving a listen. It will likely surprise you.
6. And After That, We Didn't Talk; Goldlink
Goldlink has received a lot of attention (and a Grammy nomination) for his song Crew, but most people don't realize that his debut album was (arguably) even better than his sophomore one. Give it a listen and decide for yourself.
7. Malibu; Anderson.Paak
If you like soul, funk, and R&B, Anderson .Paak is right up your alley. At a time when radio is saturated with artists molding themselves to fit a specific sound, he is an artist with a very unique and recognizable musical identity. Do yourself a favor and listen.
8. Yes Lawd!; NxWorries
This album is a neat little gem. A collab between Anderson .Paak and Knxwledge, it's something very different from the status quo. There is also a bonus remix album for those who enjoy it. That's all I'm going to say, just listen to it.
9. Blonde; Frank Ocean
I still believe this album was very underrated due to all of the hype. Expectation allowed for a devaluing of the actual album, which is really a shame. Maybe a revisit will spark your interest again?
10. CTRL; Sza
If you haven't listened to this album by now, you probably live under a rock, but as someone that attends Rock University, I understand and don't judge you. Just go ahead and hop to it while you still can. If you have already, nothing goes better with a side of dressing than the lovely velvet tones of Sza singing about women sharing a man throughout the week. It'll spark great Christmas dinner dialogue.
Even if you believe the genre of songs may not appeal to you, it's still worth giving a try. Also be sure to exercise correct listening etiquette and listen to every song all the way through. Some of the songs switch up, and what you thought you didn't like may become your favorite song. Who knows?
Once again; You're welcome.
