Why I Aim For Good Stewardship With Technology

Being a good steward means a person doesn't take what they have for granted, and uses what they're given to the best of their ability.

I find myself looking around sometimes, and all I can see is a crowd of people on their smartphones, or giving great attention to something on the screen of their laptops. Some of them are using their devices for very important things. They're using their technology for what it was intended to be used for. Others aren't being as good a steward of their devices and time as they should be, and they're using their technology as an escape. Being a good steward means a person doesn't take what they have for granted, and uses what they're given to the best of their ability. If the members of society aren't careful, they'll run to technology every time they think they need to be rescued from the reality of life.

There are times when I've been guilty of not stewarding my electronic devices well, and taken advantage of them. Every time I take advantage of them, however, I'm reminded that I cannot truly escape reality. I'm always brought back to real life. Sure, I can get away for a little while, and sometimes it's good to take a break and relax, but most of the time, my life is very similar to the way I left it when I tried to get lost in technology. I know my problems won't be solved by ignoring them through seeking an escape.

I aim for good stewardship with technology because I know I can use it for the benefit of myself and others. I can use to help others, stay in contact with people, grow in knowledge through educating myself, and learn more about the world we live in. I think there's a balance that's necessary when using electronic devices. Our lives shouldn't be dictated by technology, who liked whose Facebook status, what celebrity made a Tweet about another celebrity, what political figure said this about their opponent, when the next season of episodes is released, what someone said in a text message or email, and what photos someone put on their Instagram. There's more to life than what technology can do for us, and I think what technology can actually do for us can limit us in the ways we can improve and become better versions of ourselves.

I think being a good steward with technology significantly increases one's ability to be a good steward of their time. People often say they might be too busy to do something when it actuality, much of their business consists of scrolling through Facebook, taking selfies, and trying to figure out what filter to put it under. It doesn't take much effort to click a mouse, scroll up on a touch screen with your finger, or binge watch a TV show. It does, however, take some effort to read a book and actually comprehend what you're reading. You might be the kind of person who enjoys using a printed copy of a book, or you may still prefer to read it on an electronic device. That could be considered good stewardship of your time and technology.

Many members of society have formed the habit of running from real life to the virtual world. Good stewardship of electronic devices should be encouraged and practiced, not just thought of as a nice idea. There are times when being a good steward of technology involves taking time to relax, but often, people don't value the balance of work and play. Being consumed by technology doesn't dissolve life dilemmas. Instead of running to technology to escape your reality, try putting your devices down and place your effort in making your reality better.
