Out of the 7 billion people that occupy our Earth today, every person comes equipped with their own set of values and personality traits. These particular experiences can vary from professional, academic, and even personal standpoints.
It becomes difficult to remember that everyone is not always on the same wavelength. Nonetheless, this also provides us with the opportunity to reflect on how our own experiences have created us into the people we are today.
From a personal standpoint, I know that I would not be the young woman I am without having been raised in a rural environment. My upbringing has assisted me in numerous ways as I've grown into a passionate advocate for the agricultural industry.
Four specific viewpoints come to mind when I consider how being raised in an agricultural environment has benefitted me. So, without further adieu here is what my agricultural upbringing taught me.
1. How to obtain a hard work ethic
Anyone can state that they have a hard work ethic; however, when a person can fully prove their potential in this competency area, it speaks louder than words. I learned that without hard work I couldn't have accomplished some of my toughest challenges. Whether it was early mornings and late nights spent in the barn with my 4-H steers, I knew that all of my dedication would eventually pay off.
2. How to utilize opportunities to network with others throughout the industry
This particular point has pertained more to me now as a young professional in agriculture. My networking skills that I obtained from participating in 4-H and FFA have come to benefit me as a college student. When others say that it's a small world, it is one-hundred percent the truth. I have come to know so many intelligent and devoted individuals in this industry that obtain so much potential and have also assisted me in numerous ways. I know that I would not have been granted these opportunities without putting to use my communication skill set and building off of what I had already learned at home.
3. To always value cherished moments with family
Some of my favorite memories have come from riding in the buddy seat while my dad, mom, and older brother have been operating machinery. Our small talks have created a lasting remembrance of my precious farming family that will stay with me for the rest of my life. Also, when I am granted the opportunity to travel home for a weekend, I am reminded why I chose the career path that I did. Simply observing my family and how they care for the land and livestock that feed our world is amazing.
4. To never take things for granted
Life can most certainly flash before your eyes, so always remember to say "I love you" to those you care about the most. Although I am a sophomore, I still get an ill feeling when having to leave home. However, I know that I will always have my family's love and support throughout all of my life endeavors.
