5 Things My Little Brothers Need To Know Before I Leave For College

Annoying. Bratty. Stubborn. Something I'll truly miss when I'm away at college. These phrases all have one thing in common: They accurately describe my little brothers.

Sure, they can be the reason I want to rip my hair out sometimes, but the two of them are also some amazing friends I can always rely on.

Between Christian, my 8-year-old lovable superstar athlete who will always stand up for his family, and Noah, my 6-year-old video game obsessed homebody, I know that I would never trade the two of them for anything (not even the little sister I used to hope for).

Although we tend to fight (a lot), we have each other's backs when it actually counts.

If I'm upset and crying about something, important or not, I know my brothers will be the first ones there with a tissue and a baseball bat for whoever made me cry.

If one of my brothers come home from school and tell me about the teeniest tiniest incident where some kid was rude to them, I'm fuming.

My point is we really love each other, and even though I spent half of my life as an only child, I can't even imagine my life now without them, and obviously I've been around for their whole lives so when I'm away at college it's gonna be sort of strange for all of us.

We are so used to having each other so close by and always playing board games with each other that I don't even really know what to expect when I'm gone.

So, with my last few months before college slowly coming to an end, I have a few things my brothers always need to remember while I'm gone.

1. FaceTime me!

I don't care how busy I am with schoolwork. If you need me, call me. Whether you actually have a problem or just miss me and want to talk, always know my door, or phone in this case, is always open.

2. Don't get too big for your britches.

Since I'll be gone, Christian, you will be stepping up as "the oldest child in the house." Don't forget that I'm only gone for a little while and I'll be coming back. When that happens, trust me, you'll be knocked right back down!

3. Tell some dad jokes for me.

Like I said, I'll be gone and there are some roles that need to be filled. Dad joke telling is definitely one of those roles. Without me, your lives are going to be pretty boring if someone doesn't start making everyone laugh, but then again if you FaceTime me enough I might still pretty much be around to tell some jokes.

4. Have fun!

Christian, this goes without saying for you. You've never been afraid to go out and do what you want, whether that be performing, playing sports, or just being a little showoff for the family.

Noah, you on the other hand need to forget about other people! Don't be afraid to try something new because you never know how much you'll love it! Instead of just playing video games all day, try a sport because for all you know, it could be the best thing you've ever done.

5. Keep being awesome.

You guys are my absolute best friends ever. Nothing is going to change that, but you better not turn really lame while I'm away at school. Keep being nice people. Keep doing well in school. Keep doing your best. Just keep being the amazing brothers you've been your whole lives.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.
