An Open Letter To You

Dear You,

This is your time. You might be anxious, doubting yourself, worried about your future. You might be excited; ready to take on a change in the new year. If you feel any of these things, your feelings are valid. But, you cannot let negative feelings dictate your new year or life. This year is up to you. Your goals are unique to you and only you have the power to achieve them. If you're looking for a sign to start something you've been putting off or making yourself take a leap, this is it.

I know you want to make 2019 the best year yet, but I hate to break it to you, it won't happen on its own. It probably isn't fate that everything is going to fall into place for you this year, and that is OK because you can work for it. I'm not saying that good things won't happen because of fate or destiny or whatever you believe in, but you are wasting your time if you think that everything will be exactly the way you want it to be and you will be successful just by chance. Allow yourself to get motivated and actually act on your goals this year. Allow yourself to understand that good things take time and hard work. Allow yourself that time and hard work.

You are capable, you are smart, and you are able. Whatever you set your mind to, you can achieve. You have to set a goal, get motivated, make a plan, and stick to that plan. As soon as you make a plan and set that plan into to action to reach your goals, you are taking the best first step possible towards a new you. It may be hard, but it is the only way to ensure that you are going in the right direction and not just being stagnant in an area you can be excelling in.

So here's to you and here's to action. Let's do this.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.
