Some things you learn along the way, and some things your mom nags you about.

Advice Only My Mother Would Give
Truett Duhon

She’s an odd one, don’t get me wrong, but I love her anyways. She’s been there for me since birth, literally, and in two weeks I say goodbye to my old best friend. But no worries, she’s taught me many, many life lessons along the way. Not just “brush your teeth every day” or “if you swallow watermelon seeds, a watermelon tree will grow inside of you,” but more along the helpful tips that get any young girl through life. Here’s to you mom, no one else I’d rather laugh until I snort with.

1. “Suck it up, no one wants to hear you crying”
You were right, no one wanted to hear my cry but that brings me to my next advice.

2. “If you aren’t bleeding, a bone isn’t sticking out, or you aren’t unconscious, I don’t care”
Too bad you were wrong and I actually did break my wrist/ankle/knee/had a concussion.

3. “Boy are like toys, you should play with them when you want and put them away when you don’t”
You were and still are very right about this one.

4. “Never expect anything less than perfection”
You were right and I thank you for living by this.

5. “Sometimes you need a bubble bath”
We all need a bubble bath once a week I believe.

6. “Stop calling yourself fat and go work out, otherwise stop complaining”
You’re, again, completely right about this one.

7. “Confidence and beauty go hand-and-hand”
Only the truth.

8. “You’re only as good as you think you are”
And if you think you’re bad, you probably are.

9. “Beauty on the inside doesn’t get you free drinks”
Although this was said as a joke, my friends and I still laugh at this.

10. “We don’t quit in this household”
Even when it was choir and I should have quit.

11. “Amazing”
It can be used in all aspects. “You’re amazing” or “that’s amazing” or “wow amazing.”

12. “Don’t ever, ever rely on a man for anything”

13. “Are you sure you don’t want to go get froyo?”
Frozen yogurt is always the answer.

14. “Cry once, then get up and get over it”
Sometimes harder said than done.

15. "Beauty fades”
This is usually followed by “then you get botox and hope for the best.”

16. “Work hard and when you think that’s enough, work a little bit harder”
Still working on this one.

17. “Don’t trust a man with a trust fund”
Haven’t tried this but I feel as if I’ve learned this one.

18. “Don’t forget to say your prayers”
Thankful for your daily reminders.

19. “Now go be awesome”
On my way mom!

20. “I love you to the moon and back”
This was my favorite of your sayings for you said it always and never missed a bad day.

You’re not only just my big best friend but my favorite person to sit and eat frozen yogurt with. Whether it be two days from now or fifteen years from now, I promise I won’t forget your daily sayings and advice. Not because it’s good but because you’re hard to forget.

Ever since I could remember, it was a treat to receive Easter Bread made by my grandmother. We would only have it once a year and the wait was excruciating. Now that my grandmother has gotten older, she has stopped baking a lot of her recipes that require a lot of hand usage--her traditional Italian baking means no machines. So for the past few years, I have missed enjoying my Easter Bread.

I was asked so many times why I wanted to go to a small school when a big university is so much better. Don't get me wrong, I'm sure a big university is great but I absolutely love going to a small school. I know that I miss out on big sporting events and having people actually know where it is. I can't even count how many times I've been asked where it is and I know they won't know so I just say "somewhere in the middle of Wisconsin." But, I get to know most people at my school and I know my professors very well. Not to mention, being able to walk to the other side of campus in 5 minutes at a casual walking pace. I am so happy I made the decision to go to school where I did. I love my school and these are just a few reasons why.
