6 Realizations I Want My Sister To Have Before Starting Middle School
Kayla Quinn

My sister Sasha and I are eight and a half years apart. It's honestly quite an awkward age gap between siblings. At 11, she is smart, bubbly, and so ambitious.

After just a couple of weeks into summer, Sasha started telling me how bored she was and how she can't wait to go back to school.

In September, she will be starting middle school. I remember having a good experience, but middle school is generally categorized as an "awkward phase".

Sasha, although I have no doubt that you will fly through your middle school years in such an admirable way, I have a few pieces of advice for you to take along the ride:

1. Ask lots and lots of questions

Don't know the answer to something? That's okay! Don't shy away from speaking up and letting your curiosity shine.

2. Manage your time

School is important and it should take up a good portion of your time, but don't forget to enjoy yourself too. Make time for clubs and for friends, and keep Mom company while I'm away at school!

3. Don’t change yourself for anyone

Okay, you knew I was going to include the cheesiest line in the book, but in all seriousness, don't change what you love or who you are for anyone or anything. You'll find people who won't care about your interests because they'll share them. I promise.

4. Let yourself mess up

Don't be so afraid of failure that you avoid taking any risks at all. It's okay to mess up; it will shape who you are in the long run.

5. Don’t be in a rush to grow up

From here on out, everything is going to fly right before your eyes. Some days, it'll feel especially slow, and then time will sneak around and rush by you. Don't wish away the time you have now.

6. Always feel free to call

I may not be right there everyday after you come home from school, but I'm always only a phone call away. Don't forget that!

Sasha, you're going to kill it in middle school, I'm so excited to see where life takes you!

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.

Challah vs. Easter Bread: A Delicious Dilemma

Is there really such a difference in Challah bread or Easter Bread?

Ever since I could remember, it was a treat to receive Easter Bread made by my grandmother. We would only have it once a year and the wait was excruciating. Now that my grandmother has gotten older, she has stopped baking a lot of her recipes that require a lot of hand usage--her traditional Italian baking means no machines. So for the past few years, I have missed enjoying my Easter Bread.
