Advice For My Younger Friends

To my “kids,”

In the years we’ve been friends, you’ve watched me experience lots of firsts, make scary decisions and see parts of the world that we didn’t even know existed. Pretty soon, you’ll be going through some of the same things I went through. Even though we don’t see each other every day like we used to, I intend to be there every step of the way for whatever you might need, just like you were there for me. For the times that you might have to figure it out yourself, here are a few things I want you to know before you get to the real world.

Live in every moment and embrace it.

Don’t act too grown up too soon, because trust me, it’s not as glamorous as everyone makes it seem. You have the world in your hands: Run with it.

Make mistakes and accept them.

Every mistake is a lesson learned, and if you understand that everything happens for a reason, you’ll be able to accept whatever comes your way. Pro-tip: This makes it so much easier to be happy.

Never change yourself for anyone.

Not for a boy, not for your parents and not for anyone, you’re incredible and unique the way you are; please never let anyone take that from you.

Love the good days, and learn from the bad days.

There are going to be days where you feel invincible and powerful, and there are going to be days where you feel like everything is falling apart. It might not seem like it yet, but both are important and will help you grow.

Remember how strong you are.

Even on your worst days, you can’t give up. You’re going to do incredible things, and I can’t wait to see how you do them.

Know who your real friends are.

If the people around you are holding you back, you have the wrong friends. Surround yourself with people that love you and support you through everything. I promise to be this for you.

It’s been amazing to watch you grow and experience everything life has to offer. You’re going to do amazing things! Promise me that when you get to where you’re going, you’ll remember who you really are and how you got there.

With much love,

Your “real world” go-to girl

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.

Challah vs. Easter Bread: A Delicious Dilemma

Is there really such a difference in Challah bread or Easter Bread?

Ever since I could remember, it was a treat to receive Easter Bread made by my grandmother. We would only have it once a year and the wait was excruciating. Now that my grandmother has gotten older, she has stopped baking a lot of her recipes that require a lot of hand usage--her traditional Italian baking means no machines. So for the past few years, I have missed enjoying my Easter Bread.
