Adventure In The Mundane

You don’t need to climb a mountain or kayak down the Mississippi to have an adventure.

Sometimes I think we confuse adventure for going off to distance places and escaping our mundane life, but adventure can be found in every situation. We think that if we had the job that gave us a ton of money or the schedule that gave us plenty of time to go to the places we want, then we can have the adventurous life that we see. We get envious of all the adventures we see people having on social media, but the truth is that social media enhances the appearance of our lives and only shows the good. The truth is having an adventure is in every day and it just needs to be found. Here are a few ways to find adventure every day.

1. Be in the moment.

Having adventure means being in the moment, and you’re not in the moment when you’re thinking about taking a picture. So for once, go to that concert and enjoy the experience without taking a photo. Be in the presence of something worth marveling and burn that memory into your head and you won’t feel the need to snap a picture of it.

2. Get off social media.

OK this tip follows the last one. Have you ever realized the more fun you’re having the less you get on your phone? On social media, you’re not really in the moment and you’re probably comparing yourself to someone else when you’re on it. Stay off the social media and just enjoy what’s right in front of you at this moment.

3. Go outside.

This is the easiest thing to do. Go where your feet carry you and be surprised by all the beauty that is in the town you live in. Go to some parks and trails that you’ve never been before. Take a bike ride down a non-busy road or kayak at a nearby lake. Hike up that giant hill and read a book at the top. You don’t need to climb a mountain, just take a walk around your neighborhood around sunset and enjoy the view. You’ll be surprised how much you can appreciate the sounds of birds singing and how beautiful nature looks.

4. Change your routine.

This one’s pretty obvious, but sometimes a little break in your routine can help you re-focus and break the pattern of the mundane. Take a different route to the store or go to a part of town that you have never been before (like downtown). You don’t have to completely abandon your daily routine, but some days you need to shake it up a little bit. Go ahead and try that new restaurant or go to nearby city that you’ve never been to. Try it out and change it up.

5. Take up a new hobby.

This one’s a bonus; you’re already changing up your routine a little bit by adding something new, so go ahead take up calligraphy or if you’re more of the active type, then try picking a sport like volleyball and just have fun with it.

Adventures come in all forms, but you have to have that mindset to live in the moment. Don’t forget that all good adventures involve good friends, so yes those night Sonic runs do count as adventures.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.

Ever since I could remember, it was a treat to receive Easter Bread made by my grandmother. We would only have it once a year and the wait was excruciating. Now that my grandmother has gotten older, she has stopped baking a lot of her recipes that require a lot of hand usage--her traditional Italian baking means no machines. So for the past few years, I have missed enjoying my Easter Bread.

Top 10 Reasons My School Rocks!

Why I Chose a Small School Over a Big University.

I was asked so many times why I wanted to go to a small school when a big university is so much better. Don't get me wrong, I'm sure a big university is great but I absolutely love going to a small school. I know that I miss out on big sporting events and having people actually know where it is. I can't even count how many times I've been asked where it is and I know they won't know so I just say "somewhere in the middle of Wisconsin." But, I get to know most people at my school and I know my professors very well. Not to mention, being able to walk to the other side of campus in 5 minutes at a casual walking pace. I am so happy I made the decision to go to school where I did. I love my school and these are just a few reasons why.
