Not all help for depression needs to be verbal.
Sometimes, most times, even, actions speak louder than words. Here are 25 non-verbal things that people can do to show their loved ones with depression that they care:
1. Appropriate physical touch
ALWAYS ask before touching someone. I know that for me, a gentle touch on the arm or a long hug can make me feel 100 times better.
2. Go for a walk
Even if it's just twice around the block.
3. Give them something handmade
Everyone loves gifts and there's nothing more special than knowing that your gift was made with love.
4. Write a note
Words are still words... Write down how much you love them and how much they mean to you.
5. Do a chore for them
See the dishwasher is clean? Empty it for them!
6. Get out of the house
Even if it's to the post office and back, leaving the house is leaving the house and that should be celebrated!
7. Find a new hobby together
See if that hot yoga class at the gym is starting new classes soon!
8. Play with animals
It's a double win: animals love to be played with and there is known therapeutic healing while you play with animals.
9. Buy/pick flowers together
Find out what flower is their favorite and grab some for the kitchen table.
10. Dress up with them
You may never leave the house, but that new dress needs to be worn!
11. Go shopping with them
Find out what the hours are at your local thrift shop and see who can find the coolest bargain.
12. Take pictures together
Snapchat filters never fail to put a smile on someone's face... And then you'll have the memory forever.
13. Look at old memories
Pull out those old baby albums...
14. Trying something that they love
If they love painting, go buy some paints and a canvas. If they love tennis, offer to go to the court with them - show them that you care about what they love.
15. Go to appointments with them
Sometimes it's scary having to go to a psychiatrist by yourself. Offer to go with them, even if you just wait in the waiting room.
16. Order for them
Depression and anxiety have a way of debilitating people... Sometimes all people that are struggling want is for someone to take the lead.
17. Keep them company (even in silence)
If they're stuck in their room under their blankets, grab a pillow and keep them company.
18. Stay up late with them
People with depression sometimes have insomnia, too. Even if it's one night on the weekend, bring over some snacks and a movie and make the most of a long night.
19. Get them their favorite food
Find out what their favorite candy is and buy three.
20. Smile
Sometimes just seeing happiness on someone else's face can brighten a person's mood.
21. Plan an event
...Even if it's imaginary
22. Learn about their mental illness
Go to the library for a couple hours and really research what "Depression" is.
