In what many would call an act of poetic justice, the video game titled 'Active Shooter' was pulled from the Steam marketplace today. This comes just days before the games June 6th release date. The early access, first-person shooter was meant to provide players with the opportunity to play as either SWAT officers, the shooter, or civilians in active shooter situations. Steam's parent company Valve Corporation made the decision to scrap the game after receiving public outcry from students and parents calling the game distasteful and inappropriate.
One individual, Stephanie Robinett, created a petition for Valve to pull the game from its Steam Platform. "How could anybody think that this is ok?" Robinett stated in an interview with HLN. "It's not ok to do it in a school especially right now. Any reasonable company should know that."
This isn't the first time steam has come under fire for choosing to release violent and controversial titles. 'Hatred' was a game that made its debut on the steam platform in 2015. The game centers around a homicidal maniac that goes on a mission to kill as many individuals as possible. Like 'Active Shooter' many individuals complained about the level of violence 'Hatred' displayed amid the rise in school shootings. Also, like 'Active Shooter', 'Hatred' was taken off of the steam platform in response to public outcry. The Key difference? Hatred was re-released onto the Steam platform when Steam found the developers had done nothing wrong.
When 'Hatred' was re-released, it became the third game in history to receive an adults-only ESRB rating for violence behind 'Thrill Kill' and 'Manhunt 2'. The possibility of 'Active Shooter' being re-uploaded seems rather unlikely. Unlike the developers of 'Hatred', (whom despite producing such a violent game had a spotless track record) this is not the first time Revived Games developer, Ata Berdiyev has been banned on the platform. In the past, Berdiyev was banned for creating fake pseudonyms and review fabrication. Valve spokesman, Doug Lombardi has called Berdiyev a "troll".
"Ata is a troll, with a history of customer abuse, publishing copyrighted material, and user review manipulation. His subsequent return under new business names was a fact that came to light as we investigated the controversy around his upcoming title. We are not going to do business with people who act like this towards our customers or Valve."
In response to these findings, Revived Games Steam Catalog has been removed along with his previous titles, 'White Power: Pure Voltage' and 'Tyde Pod Challenge'.
