Taking An Accounting Class As Told By 'Mean Girls'

Accounting 211 is about to hit you in the face just like the shoe that hit Damien when he was killing his solo.

Accounting 211 "Fundamentals of Financial Accounting", is known as one of the hardest classes to take at Radford University. Professors will openly tell you, this is a hard class and it requires a lot of effort. You will have to study and if you find yourself behind, it's going to be hell on you in the future.

Of course, when professors are telling you all this on syllabus, you're probably thinking:

Can't I just get my degree already? So congratulations! You just signed up for hell in the form of T-accounts and balance sheets. Little do you know that accounting is about to hit you in the face just like the shoe that hit Damien when he was killing his solo.

So first they'll start off with basic definitions; what is accounting? What is a balance sheet? If you get Scheetz, she's sweet enough to give you a exercises and notes book with fill-in the blanks and matching. You're probably thinking, "Wow, this is easy":

Then we'll start moving into the magical world of defining assets, liabilities, and stockholder equity. REMEMBER Assets equal Liabilities plus Stockholder Equity. Get it tattooed into your mind forever! Also, you'll learn about normal debit or credit balances! Fun! Fun! Fun!

Well here come the journal entries. You get to decipher which accounts are affected and whether they fall under debit or credit. Plot twist; it might not even need a journal entry. Suddenly you're starting to feel a little:

Time to go into trial balances, income statements, and post-closing trial balances! Meaning if you mess up one part of the problem it can all come crashing down! Also, Connect only gives you two chances to submit your work and, no, it won't directly tell you the answers after the first try.

Wow! You've been here for like four weeks, already? Time for the first exam! At this point, I'd go to tutoring. They host it every Monday and Thursday. If you can't make it, I'd suggest the LARC (Learning Assistance and Resource Center). It's in Walker. You're desperate, you'll find it. There are so many resources to help you.

Although accounting is hard, it is a required class for a lot of Business majors. I don't even want to think about what the accounting majors are thinking right now. Sure it may feel like:

and have you feeling like :

But it'll get better! With help, you'll pass this class! Don't be afraid to ask for help! Pretty soon you'll be Regina George post-bus accident. Taking out your frustrations on this accounting homework!

Remember fetch won't happen and your accounting equations, losers!

For as long as I can remember, I have been listening to The Beatles. Every year, my mom would appropriately blast “Birthday” on anyone’s birthday. I knew all of the words to “Back In The U.S.S.R” by the time I was 5 (Even though I had no idea what or where the U.S.S.R was). I grew up with John, Paul, George, and Ringo instead Justin, JC, Joey, Chris and Lance (I had to google N*SYNC to remember their names). The highlight of my short life was Paul McCartney in concert twice. I’m not someone to “fangirl” but those days I fangirled hard. The music of The Beatles has gotten me through everything. Their songs have brought me more joy, peace, and comfort. I can listen to them in any situation and find what I need. Here are the best lyrics from The Beatles for every and any occasion.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.
