Dear Freshmen,
By now you’ve survived your first two weeks of college, so congratulations on that. Not that you weren’t going to make it, but obviously it’s a scary time. And whether you’re in a major yet or not, classes can be hard. People probably told you when you were still in high school that you’d be more than prepared for college work, but realistically it’s impossible to be fully prepared. If you’re not making mistakes, then you’re probably doing something wrong.
Speaking of mistakes, sh*t happens. I swear, you’re going to look back and laugh about these things, maybe just not for quite some time. But this is the definition of “making mems”. Find yourself some fun friends, put yourself out there, and experience college life. So what if you have an 8 am class on Friday, live in the moment and make the best of your Thursday night.
So back to what you’re technically at college to do… ~learn~ (at least sometimes). So yeah, I started out as a business major, can’t say I stayed on that journey for very long (or learned very much).
Dragged out freshman year as I tried to convince myself that I could teach myself the equations and formulas in econ, math. and eventually accounting. Moral of the story, this was a complete failure. Numbers clearly were not, and are not my thing. Hence why I’m currently a junior (almost 21… thank god), and contemplating dropping out of my third math class of college.
I finally found my one academic thing I actually like, writing. From then on I realized that all the other subjects that I’m being forced to take (and hopefully pass), math and science to be more specific, really will never matter. Yeah, kind of rough at the moment, but I’ve learned just to put all my efforts into the classes I have the ability to succeed in.
Am I going to be a world economist or a scientist… NO. Am I going to be a writer… well, that I have yet to find out, but for now that’s my subject I can feel good about. Realistically none of us know what’s to come in the future, so don’t stress about the little things.
So on that note, don’t let academics take over your life and have as much fun as you possibly can this semester. Freshman year is one of a kind, so don’t let it slip away too quickly.
