The Little Bit Of Nothing

As I stared at the blank word document trying to find the perfect topic to write about for my last article of 2019, I got nothing. So that is just what I am going to write about. If Jerry Seinfeld can have a successful sitcom based on nothing, then there is no reason not to put into words a little bit of nothing.

I could write a few hundred words on politics, but I've beat that horse hard this year, and he needs a rest because next year is going to be a bitch. I'm not a fan of Twitter so I can't and won't write about why we have a president that thinks social media is a platform for running a country. The battle going on in Washington DC fills the airwaves and has been digested and regurgitated by every political commentator from Trevor Noah, to Wolf Blitzer.

I could write about the movies of 2019, except I didn't go and see many, and the few I did go see were not worth writing about. There are a few I am looking forward to watching online, like "Downton Abbey and "Rocketman." Our book club read "The Goldfinch" and we all agree the movie is never as good as the book, so I will wait until it shows up on my Amazon Prime. I watched Toy Story 4 with my granddaughter on Christmas afternoon and I must say, not the same caliber of the first 3 and those dolls at the antique store are beyond creepy. But I'll let you make up your mind on that one.

If you don't have Netflix, then you did not lose three hours of your day watching Martin Scorsese's epic "The Irishman." Just another theory of how and why Jimmy Hoffa went missing. I felt a little vanilla about the storyline, but I have a source that told me, Pesci as Tony Pro and Robert DeNiro as Frank Sheeran is spot on. Of course, the iconic Hoffa has been portrayed by so many actors its hard to remember what he was really like however, the myths of his disappearance live on.

I am not a big fan of binge-watching but I must admit that I've done it once or twice in the past few years. My first experience with binge-watching was the first four seasons of "Game of Thrones." I also binge-watched the first season of "Handmaid's Tale," and when Hulu decided to release the series every week it was a relief to get to absorb the storyline one week at a time. Amazon Prime and Netflix leave their viewers waiting impatiently for certain shows. One of the most popular is "The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel." If you haven't seen it, I highly recommend giving it a view, but I warn you it is in its third season and you will probably binge-watch a season or two because it is just that good. Netflix has two shows that I wait impatiently to watch: "Grace and Frankie," and "The Crown." "The Crown" is in its last season and I am taking my time watching each episode.

My book club read some very interesting books this year and I was pleased to see "Killers of the Flowering Moon," on display in the New York City Public Library when I visited a few weeks ago. We also read "Daring to Drive: A Saudi Woman's Awakening." It was inspiring and awakening for each of us as well. However, some of my reading was books about past first ladies. The history of these women and their journey to the White House and how silent their lives were before, during, and after they left, even though they made an important impact on the presidency that is overshadowed by the men they married.

I was lucky enough this year to be featured in an article in the University of Central Florida's magazine "Centrix." Written by an up and coming journalist, Lauren Margolis. I am proud to know her and wish her all the success. I can't wait to see her on print in an entertainment magazine or doing a feature article on the Today show. https://issuu.com/rickbrunson/docs/centricmagazine_web?fbclid=IwAR3KUf8V5e3dghchZ6ri1Gv_20GT22XHGFP483dwuMPcYSOa_Ezb9uz5R30.

My best wishes to the creators and staff of The Odyssey and hope everyone a Happy and Prosperous New Year.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.

Ever since I could remember, it was a treat to receive Easter Bread made by my grandmother. We would only have it once a year and the wait was excruciating. Now that my grandmother has gotten older, she has stopped baking a lot of her recipes that require a lot of hand usage--her traditional Italian baking means no machines. So for the past few years, I have missed enjoying my Easter Bread.

Top 10 Reasons My School Rocks!

Why I Chose a Small School Over a Big University.

I was asked so many times why I wanted to go to a small school when a big university is so much better. Don't get me wrong, I'm sure a big university is great but I absolutely love going to a small school. I know that I miss out on big sporting events and having people actually know where it is. I can't even count how many times I've been asked where it is and I know they won't know so I just say "somewhere in the middle of Wisconsin." But, I get to know most people at my school and I know my professors very well. Not to mention, being able to walk to the other side of campus in 5 minutes at a casual walking pace. I am so happy I made the decision to go to school where I did. I love my school and these are just a few reasons why.
