A Look Inside My Overpriced Dorm Room

A Look Inside My Overpriced Dorm Room

For most, the thought of leaving home and living in a space the size of their parent's master bathroom is terrifying; however, once you have lived at a camp for half the summer, you are oddly blown away with the space of an entire desk, futon, fridge, and closet to yourself.

A summer of hot hikes and bunk bed living prepared me more for a 200 square foot room at a 37,000 student population school than I ever could've thought to be thankful for. After a very sweaty 7 am Sunday check-in, a wholesome chipotle family gathering, and one last goodbye, I was officially a college student living almost on my own.

Dorm Sweet Dorm!

An over-the-door mirror was a must and apparently so was the "ring for champagne" wall decor that is only hanging up for the sole purpose of aesthetics and color scheme despite having no actual function. On our letter board, I had to throw in my favorite summer camp saying "Cho Boi" which is part of an African chant used to welcome warriors back to the safety and support of their villages and means "welcome home". We also keep our glorious shower caddies by the door on top of the dorm-hall-supplied "pedestal" which has quickly become our snack cabinet. We also have taken "adulting" all types of serious by buying pink and grey bins for real cleaning supplies and even a shower curtain to give the appearance of clean closets.

THE Futon

Here's to the people who sell color scheme matching futons on facebook for $15. Since our futon is on the smaller end and was built to be resting low to the ground, my super dad played Bob the Builder at 7 am and put together all the pieces of the futon frame we designed. When it comes to 200 square feet, storage space is the greatest gift, and we are blessed with a full drawer under the futon and two ottomans to contain an Amber Scholl sized shoe collection. We also can't forget about the Yeti-skin looking faux fur through that feels like a polar bear hug.

The Desk/Makeup Table/Step-Stool

For Senior Night, my mom took out the glass from an old picture frame and replaced it with chicken wire, and with some glittered clothespins and a paint pen banner, the cutest DIY picture display was made. I keep my hair products and tools on my shelf alongside all my "desk pens" (I keep them separate from back pens so I have them no matter where I am). I attached my extension cord with command strips to be out of the way and reach up to my lofted bed and down to the desk easily. I have gold accents for all my organizers and even a matching laptop case.

I have a slanted mirror from IKEA for makeup. I keep a three drawer cart for makeup where I use spray painted file organizers for pallet storage, have bins in each drawer to organize my products, and have grey buckets for eyeshadow and face brushes.

My Sacred Space

Hi, my name is Ansley Cartwright, and I have an unhealthy love for coffee.

We returned our bulky K-cup organizer, and instead, used a decorative bin for all my latte needs. We have a white basket for dry snacks and a Scentsy for our candle-free dorm. We also are in the process of setting up a Wii and TV for game nights, Bachelorette showings, and Netflix addictions.

Throwin' it out!

A cute wooden sign to remind me of home, and all the throw pillows you could ever need. The ruffle bedding is also a 10/10 because you don't have to iron what is supposed to look wrinkly!

Though dorm life is a challenge, I have absolutely loved our first few days in our tiny home!!

Please enjoy pictures of a CLEAN dorm, because it won't last long !!

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.
