America is known for its ability to turn one country's film or show into its own. However, many of the American remakes are total flops in both box office and viewer appeal. I love some of these American remakes for myself, but they still pale in comparison to the original. Here's some examples of American remakes that just couldn't take off.
1. Delivery Man (2013)
Based off of the French movie Starbuck (2011), Vince Vaughn plays an underachiever low-life who finds out he has over 500 children from sperm donations. I personally love this movie but it failed to win the hearts of most of America. The biggest complaint is that the movie both followed too closely to its original and the script is almost the exact same. There's no distinction with this movie.
2. Skins (2011)
I am honestly certain that this remake is the worst of all of them. The British show Skins (2007-2013) is one of my favorite shows of all time. With a show like Skins, something was bound to go wrong. The characters are known for their constant drinking, promiscuity, and drug use, something that MTV made sure to emphasize. However, the British version isn't only about the hook-ups and drugs. Rather it focuses on each character and the struggles they must overcome in their daily lives. The character development is so good that you just want to know if they turn out okay. Never has a show ever torn me up the way Skins has and I'm so saddened that MTV turned it into one obnoxious disaster.
3. Dinner for Schmucks (2010)
This movie was originally the French film The Dinner Game (1998). It's a cute movie and I really enjoyed it, but sadly it wasn't up-to-par with the beloved original.
4. Barefoot (2014)
This American indie remake was originally a German film called Barfuss (2005). This movie is a sweet tale but the American version is very rushed and the acting is very stiff. It's not so surprising that it only got a box office rating of 22. This remake goes to show that stealing girls from a mental institution may not be the best idea, even if you are desperate for a date.
5. The Grudge (2004)
Taken from the Japanese film Ju-on (2002), this remake is a total disappointment. It isn't scary at all. What's supposed to be absolutely terrifying is just a cute Japanese kid named Toshio and his mom who both just seem way too interested in ruining everyone's personal space. Not scary unless you have serious personal space issues.
6. Clash of the Titans (2010)
Originating as the British movie Clash of the Titans (1981), this movie was just a flop altogether. On IMDb it earned a metascore of 39 and a viewer rating of 5.8/10. In its defense, it is really hard to make a good mythology-based movie.
7. Godzilla (1998, 2014)
Taken from the Japanese classic Godzilla (1954), this movie goes to show both that classics shouldn't be remade and that Asians always do it better. Don't alter a good thing.
8. City of Angels (1998)
Sorry mom, but this movie makes the list. Originally a German movie called Wings of Desire (1987), this remake is one shining example of movies that generates hate. It all feels a bit forced and there's very little transition or reason behind everything that goes on in this film. The film is simply another movie where Nicholas Cage acts as a cardboard actor.
9. Silent Library (2009)
Japan crafted it, MTV stole it. This remake once again proves that MTV can ruin anything. Japan is known for their quirky game shows, but placing Americans in the mix turns the iconic idea into no more than frat boys making bad choices and laughing all the while.
There are so many more examples of American remakes gone wrong, but these stood out to me as some of the worst. What are some of your least favorite American remakes? Let me know in the comments below.
