Graduating high school is something we all look forward to. That is until the commencement ceremony is over, the beach days have come to an end, and it's time for everyone to go away to college. It's a bittersweet transition, but if your friendship is strong, it will withstand any distance and maybe even grow stronger. Here's some tell-tale signs of a long distance friendship built to last.
1. Your FaceTime calls are sacred.
You're both going to be busy with your school work, social lives, and other priorities, so when you're both free it's a miracle. Seeing her on a screen is almost as good as having her with you.
2. She notices your accent now
Wow, she moved across the country and now she's an expert in dialects. She starts using phrases like "y'all" instead of "you guys" on FaceTime while she criticizes your midwestern expression of shock, "ope". No one knows what it means, but we can't stop saying it.
3. When you're with new friends, you can't stop telling stories about her.
It's honestly like a real relationship. You want everyone to know that no matter how good of friends you become, your actual soul mate is states away and is the ultimate friend. You can't help but tell the stories of how you two partied the nights away and ruled the school back in the day.
4. You find yourself laughing but can't explain why.
Your inside jokes become applicable in so many situations, but you can't explain to other people why you're laughing. They just won't get it. They had to be there. Like her, she was there.
5. You already hate her new friends.
Hearing the stories about her new friends and anyone who causes drama in her life makes you want to buy a ticket, fly over there, and kick some butt. No, really, Kelly from her sociology class made her do the whole group project? She's added to the blacklist.
6. You go awhile without texting and it's normal or you can text all day.
You'll be surprised by how little you text each other some days, and by how much you text each other other days. If you're good enough friends, the amount won't matter and things will stay the same regardless. Everyone needs a break from time to time, even best friends who are miles away.
7. She's always sliding into your DM's.
You'll be just hanging out, see your phone go off, and it's a Twitter/Facebook/Instagram DM of a funny gif, a cute puppy, or a relatable post that made her think of you. Scrolling and sending posts becomes second nature. Half the time you won't even read it and just reply with "OMG" followed by some laughing emojis, but it's the thought that counts.
8. You look forward to seeing her more than getting Christmas presents.
Sure, coming home for winter break is great. The best part? The best part of coming home, besides free food and not having to stress over assignments, is seeing your best friend. You find yourself creeping on Snapmap and see that her bitmoji is within driving distance of your bitmoji, and then spend the next month joined at the hip. Coffee dates, movie dates, window shopping, and anything else you get yourselves into make a great break together.
9. She has the AUDACITY to leave you again
You knew it was coming. You spent time mentally preparing yourself, but it's come. She's leaving again. It's heartbreaking. She always leaves when you were just starting to get used to having her. Next thing you know, you're staring at your countdown calendar, anxious for the summer when you can see her for a few months, if you're so lucky.
