9 Ways That I Became A Better College Student

Because organization and planning are life.

9 Ways That I Became A Better College Student
Amanda Varin

College is expensive, so why not get the most out of it?? After almost four years of college, I think I've finally mastered the art of getting your life together (kind-of). It's been a work in progress, but this year I've noticed how less stressed I am and excited about school.

I've found there are nine ways you can easily become a better college student. This year I've done these nine things and found that I became a better college student from it and got more out of lectures.

1. Go to class

Going to class will always help you, even if attendance doesn't count. You'll have to study less because you're learning in class, and you'll get more out of it rather than reading your textbook later to learn the concepts. Also, sometimes profs give out extra credit on random days, so you'll always get that.

2. Write in your planner

Actually write in it. My planner is color-coded, no joke. You don't have to be a psycho organizer like I am, but planners help you notice deadlines and that you have an exam tomorrow (oops).

3. Read your assigned readings

Read them BEFORE class that day. Also, if you take notes as you read and/or highlight it really helps you remember for later.

4. Talk with your professors/TAs

They're here to help you succeed — it's their job. Profs and TAs have office hours all the time, and only a few people come in. Even if you don't need help in the class, they can help give you tips for what is going to be on the exam, and if you visit them enough they can be a connection or a reference for you when you graduate.

5. Talk with your advisor

Again, here to help you succeed. Your advisor knows the ins and outs of all of your classes and what you need to graduate. They also have insight on the best professors and how hard the class will be. Advisors can also be helpful for resume critiques and helping you find jobs and internships (S/O to Stephannie and Tim).

6. Get a mentor

Upperclassmen, a friend, or a professor can all be your mentor. Mine has helped me with my LinkedIn, interviews, and has gotten me many connections I would never have had prior.

7. Don't procrastinate

If you get your stuff done early you'll always feel better and more prepared for the next task.

8. Put your phone away during lecture

You'll focus better and get something out of the lecture. Unless there's some drama in the group text, then I understand.

9. Ask questions

Questions help you learn! You'll also remember the questions asked in a lecture for the exams later, and it will help you have less study time later.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.

Ever since I could remember, it was a treat to receive Easter Bread made by my grandmother. We would only have it once a year and the wait was excruciating. Now that my grandmother has gotten older, she has stopped baking a lot of her recipes that require a lot of hand usage--her traditional Italian baking means no machines. So for the past few years, I have missed enjoying my Easter Bread.

Top 10 Reasons My School Rocks!

Why I Chose a Small School Over a Big University.

I was asked so many times why I wanted to go to a small school when a big university is so much better. Don't get me wrong, I'm sure a big university is great but I absolutely love going to a small school. I know that I miss out on big sporting events and having people actually know where it is. I can't even count how many times I've been asked where it is and I know they won't know so I just say "somewhere in the middle of Wisconsin." But, I get to know most people at my school and I know my professors very well. Not to mention, being able to walk to the other side of campus in 5 minutes at a casual walking pace. I am so happy I made the decision to go to school where I did. I love my school and these are just a few reasons why.
