9 Struggles Of Returning To Davidson

It's good to be back (Mostly)

9 Struggles Of Returning To Davidson

It's a great day to be a Wildcat. Looking out at Chambers lawn, sprinting up to tackle friends with a hug, seeing my new room... Davidson is a second home, and I'm thrilled to be back. But there are definitely some interesting situations that arise as we settle back into our lives here.

1. Move in

Who doesn't love lugging a refrigerator up three flights of stairs?! And it's always fun when you realize that you left your favorite sweater at home, or when you realize that there won't be extra room in your dresser to store all of the T-shirts you're going to accumulate throughout the year.

2. Summit milkshakes

God help me for being able to use my CatCard at Nummit. I'm still deciding whether to worship or curse those responsible for this decision. Either way, I can guarantee that I'll be taking full advantage of my new opportunities to buy glacier gulps. I think I've already gained a few pounds just from thinking about them.

3. Commons doors

Just when I thought I knew which way they opened, summer break happened. Now it's back to square one, and I've already almost face-planted into one of them because I pushed instead of pulled.

4. All other doors

Because who doesn't love playing "how many times do I have to swipe my CatCard before the door unlocks"? I still haven't forgiven the door that locked after I swiped.

5. Technology

Ah, yes. Davidson Secure. We meet again. And what was my email password again? And why won't my computer send things to PawPrinters????

6. Classes

It's the night before class starts, and I AM SO EXCITED!!!!! I can't wait to delve back in. But give it about three days and I'll be stressing about an essay due next week and a review scheduled for next Monday. I'll still be having fun, but I'll be running on a lot less sleep.

7. Missing home

I only live 40 minutes from campus (or an hour and a half, depending on I-77), but I already miss my parents and my pets. And I miss my friends from Charlotte, the closest of whom are two hours away from here.

8. Finding your classes in Chambers

I will name my firstborn after whoever can explain the numbering system in Chambers to me. Why in God's name are they 4 numbers long? Where do the numbers come from? Are all of the hallways necessary? And why do there have to be so many stairs?

9. Wanting to do everything

From extracurriculars to classes outside our majors that we have literally no time for, Davidson students love to overcommit. The passion of the students is one of the most incredible things about this place. A word of advice: watch out at the activities fair.

For as long as I can remember, I have been listening to The Beatles. Every year, my mom would appropriately blast “Birthday” on anyone’s birthday. I knew all of the words to “Back In The U.S.S.R” by the time I was 5 (Even though I had no idea what or where the U.S.S.R was). I grew up with John, Paul, George, and Ringo instead Justin, JC, Joey, Chris and Lance (I had to google N*SYNC to remember their names). The highlight of my short life was Paul McCartney in concert twice. I’m not someone to “fangirl” but those days I fangirled hard. The music of The Beatles has gotten me through everything. Their songs have brought me more joy, peace, and comfort. I can listen to them in any situation and find what I need. Here are the best lyrics from The Beatles for every and any occasion.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.
