Finals are around the corner, the end of the semester is near, and summer is almost here. Who could be more excited than us college students who have worked our butts off for months? Unfortunately, with summer comes the sadness too because you have to leave your best friends from college to go home. Here are some struggles we all know to be true about leaving our best friends.
1. The Goodbye
How the heck do you say goodbye to the people you spend all your time with? And now you have to wave and say goodbye while you’re dying on the inside. Who came up with this?
2. Texting them the within the next 30 seconds after the final goodbye
30 seconds is just too long without talking to them. Has anything new changed since you last saw them? Everything.
3. “What do I do now?"
You’ll go home and reunite with your cat and all will be well. Then, you’ll sit on your bed and look around. You have two choices. Go hang out with your dad while he watches cat videos on Facebook or go bother your brother while he yells at his Xbox. While both sound riveting, you’d rather be bugging your best friends. What do you do now?
4. When the separation becomes real
These people were latched at your hip and now they’re hours away. Where is your life going? Now you’re alone at 11 p.m. on a Tuesday night when these used to be the nights you’d watch some crappy Netflix movie while eating chips and salsa out of a jar. And now the only person who cares is your cat. YOU’RE A WINNER.
5. Texting them 24/7 to make it hurt less.
“What are you doing?”
“Eating, you?”
“Petting my dog.”
“That sounds real fun.”
“Yeah... so what are you doing now?”
Repeat. Because you need to know what they’re doing at every moment since you’re not there to experience it with them.
6. Having to keep your dumb thoughts to yourself
You tell them everything. You know, the things you regret saying as soon as you open your mouth? Now what do you do?
7. Trying to get your hometown best friends to understand
You don’t love them any less. Your hometown best friends mean the world to you. At the same time, you’re pissed at your college best friends for living so far away.
8. Coming up with all the fun things you and your college best friends will do once you reunite
Your plans:
Imagination: Everything. Let’s be crazy and spontaneous because #yolo and we’re young and need to be adventurous--
Reality: Returning to your bed to finish that crappy Netflix movie as you eat chips and salsa out of a NEW jar.
9. When you and your friends finally reunite
When this long-awaited day finally arrives, be prepared. Because this will be the happiest day of your freakin’ lives.
To all those long distance college best friends out there, don’t worry. It gets easier. We’ll learn to survive until we can see them again.
