Applying for your major and waiting on an acceptance letter is definitely one of the most nerve-racking things a college student has to deal with. So when you open that beautiful acceptance letter and see your name followed by an excited 'Congratulations!' you think you can finally breathe a sigh of relief because the hard part is over, right? Wrong.
These are some of the stressful things that will flash through your head once you’ve gotten into your major:
1. You did all this work to get in and now you might be worried it isn’t the right major for you.
On average, people change their major 3 times throughout college, and while doing that before you apply to a specific major is fine, once you get into one, it makes it a little harder to switch and stay on track.
2. Things are a little anti-climactic if there was no formal application process.
With some majors, as soon as you get into the school, you get into the major, which means you can start taking prerequisites right away.
3. Regular amounts of coursework are over, here come constant group projects and giant end-of-the-year assignments.
Many majors scale back on weekly homework assignments and make all of your points for the class come from large projects and a few exams.
4. You’re hoping you’ll actually be able to find a job related to this major.
There will be a lot of time, money, and resources that are poured into your education and you’re just hoping there’s a job out there that will help you pay back all these student loans.
5. Not only do you have your regular amount of coursework for the major, there’s extra stuff too.
Some majors require hundreds of hours of community service, practicum hours, or out-of-class activities that are an important part of your learning. Say goodbye to your social life and nap schedule.
6. You start to realize that the rest of your life is closer than you thought it was.
Most students start their major-related classes their junior year, which means there are only a couple years until you’re thrown out into the real world.
7. But that also means, gen ed classes are over!!!!
Those stupid 100 level math classes you hated or the boring history classes you had to take to fill graduation requirements are a thing of the past; now you actually get to learn about things you care about!
8. You’ll be with the same people in the same classes for the next 2 years.
You gain super close friends and form great bonds and connections with your future colleagues. All these new found friends will be perfect for when you’re all crying in the library at 3 AM at the end of the semester.
9. But most importantly, you’ll be super happy you got into your major!
You worked so hard to be here, you may have even applied a few times before with no luck, but now you’re actually in. Get ready for the best next few years of your life, and don’t worry, you’ll figure everything out. This is an exciting part of your college career and now you finally get to start doing what you truly love.
