Valentine's Day is coming up soon and you all know what that means: lots of pinks and reds adorning the world, hearts scattered through the land, and, of course, romantic comedies. Rom-coms are probably the cheesiest movies known to man, and that's exactly what makes them so great. Below, I have compiled a list of the nine best rom-coms that will make even the bitterest and single-ist among us melt with utter gooeyness.
1. Leap Year
Ugh. I love this movie. Amy Adams and Matthew Goode are so adorable and their chemistry is to die for. Basically, Adams's character Anna travels to Ireland to propose to her boyfriend Jeremy (Adam Scott) on Leap Day, but runs into some trouble with the weather, causing her plane to land in Wales instead of Dublin, Ireland. She eventually makes it to Dingle where she meets Declan (Goode) who agrees to take her to Dublin for a fee.
2. When in Rome
Another movie that I love. Kristen Bell is one of my favorite actresses. She is so awesome and full of life in this movie and the chemistry she has with Josh Duhamel is superb. Beth goes to Rome for her little sister's wedding where she meets best man Nick. At the reception, Beth gets a little drunk and steals several coins from the Fontana d'Amore, which causes four eccentric strangers to fall madly in love with her. (Fun fact: One of these strangers is Bell's now husband, Dax Shepard). While trying to spark a romance between herself and Nick, Beth also has to deal with these unwanted advances.
3. Bridget Jones's Diary
This is a movie that I just recently watched for the first time and I fell in love. Renee Zellweger plays an unhappy singleton named, you guessed it, Bridget Jones who is a woman in her thirties that is constantly being pressured to find a man. Through this, she finds two men played by Hugh Grant (Daniel) and Colin Firth (Mark). Daniel is her boss and a (very attractive) playboy and Mark is a kind and somewhat stiff lawyer and Bridget has to make a decision between the two. (Side note: the book this is based on is a must read).
4. You've Got Mail
There is no way that I wasn't going to have a Tom Hanks/Meg Ryan movie on this list and I have chosen my favorite of the three. Joe Fox and Kathleen Kelly are business rivals who start out hating each other when Joe's chain bookstore opens near Kathleen's independent bookstore and threatens to close her down. The twist, though, is that these two are anonymous pen pals who have been emailing back and forth for months.
5. My Big Fat Greek Wedding
Nia Vardalos who plays Toula is a single woman stuck in the middle of a big and loud Greek family. She is unhappy with her life and thinks it is going nowhere until she decides to got to college, get a job at her aunt's traveling agency, and meets Ian (John Corbett) at her family restaurant. After starting her romance with Ian, she then has to deal with her family and the fact that Ian isn't Greek. (Fun fact: this story was originally a one woman play preformed by Vardalos).
6. 10 Things I Hate About You
Ah, the teen angst in this movie was strong, but so were the major feels. Sisters Kat (Julia Stiles) and Bianca (Larisa Oleynik) aren't allowed to date. That is, until Bianca makes a deal with her dad that she will be allowed to date as soon as her older sister Kat does. The only problem with this plan is that Kat has zero interest in dating. That is, until Cameron (Joseph Gordon-Levitt) and Michael (David Krumholz) pay Patrick (Heath Ledger) to take Kat out on a date. She is at first resistant, but the pair soon find that they are both actually into each other.
7. The Princess Bride
A different sort of movie for this list. Westley (Cary Elwes) and Buttercup (Robin Wright) were in love a long time ago before they got separated and she was told he died. Years later, Buttercup is engaged to marry a Count, but a mysterious man in a mask shows up to stop it. With the help of Inigo Montoya (Mandy Patinkin) and Fezzik (Andre the Giant), they infiltrate the castle to save Buttercup and get revenge.
8. How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days
While anyone who knows me knows I am certainly not Matthew McConaughey's biggest fan, Kate Hudson is so outstanding in this movie that he is actually tolerable. Andie, the "how to" girl for a magazine, decides to write a story about ho to lose a guy in 10 days so she can write what she really wants. Ben bets his boss that he can make a girl fall in love with him in two weeks. The two meet, both with ulterior motives, but eventually form something real.
9. The Proposal
Last, but certainly not least, "The Proposal." Margaret Tate (Sandra Bullock) requests for her assistant Andrew (Ryan Reynolds) to marry her so she can keep her green card. Because of this, she had to travel to Alaska to meet Andrew's family. Through this adventure, the two learn more about each other and their mutual hate turns into something better.
