As humans, we want answers for everything. Even for an unexplainable phenomenon like a ghost sighting or Bigfoot. If we can't pinpoint exactly what something is, or why something happens, it can be scary and a topic you don’t want to cross into. Your dreams and subconsciousness can be an unknown territory that is everything but explainable. It’s hard to determine the meanings behind dreams and what exactly they mean. What's even harder, is remembering your dreams and the stories they hold.
I had the pleasure of taking a film photography class at Illinois State University. There, I used a Promaster film camera. I took every picture manually and then developed the light sensitive film in a dark room. It is true that almost anybody can be a photographer. However, not everyone can be a great photographer. It takes the click of a button to capture a moment before it is gone forever. A great photographer must prepare and foreshadow that moment. In this series, I took 9 photos that capture dreams and subconscious; these dreams stemming from the dreams you have at 1 am to the daydreams you have at work.
These photographs mimic many dreams that I have. Dreams are more often than not, distorted and blurry. However, some are as clear as the flower in the second photograph above. We hardly ever sees clear faces that we know in dreams, but cut-outs of what looks like someone you might know. For me, it's easiest to remember the nightmares that I have. Sometimes I might not remember exactly what happened in a dream but can remember exactly how I felt. This is common and can skew our interpretations of our dreams.
While our dreams and subconscious might not be a familiar territory to most, it is certainly an intriguing one. Expanding your mind to this topic will make you question who you are, why you are a certain way, and above all, what it all means.
