I've been a fan of baseball since I was four years old. Yes, baseball has been a part of almost my entire life. Within those times, I would not only learn the game of baseball and play the game of baseball (yes I played softball), I would experience some great memories involving America's pastime. Here are a couple. Also a quick note: most of these will involve the Cleveland Indians as I am from Cleveland, Ohio.
1. The Indians clinching the 2007 American League Central championship.
I didn't realize the Indians would be going to the playoffs until I went to this game. It was me and my parents and when I realized what might happen at this game, I wanted to win so badly. We did win 6-2 against the Oakland Athletics on September 23, 2007. I would watch the banner raise and it was an amazing part of my tiny nine year old life.
2. The 2013 AL wild card game.
Sure the Indians didn't win the game, but I consider this one of the memorable games I've been to. Yes, I did see a couple of fights during the game.
3. Meeting Todd Frazier.
Back before third baseman Todd Frazier went to New York to play for the Yankees, I got a crazy chance to meet him before a game on September 25, 2016. We got seats close by the visiting dugout and the tribe was playing the White Sox that afternoon. So you'd expect a couple of White Sox fans to be wanting to meet players along with tribe fan. Todd Frazier took time after his warmup to talk to fans, sign things, and take pictures. Let's just say sneaking in a picture before he came over to me was not the best as I ran out of storage. But thankfully mom took one on hers and he was patient.
4. Meeting a bunch of players who played in the 2000s.
I was a member of an old country club and they did a thing where they had a bunch of players come and sign things. One of the signatures I could really remember was Cliff Lee and another was Casey Blake.
5. Then meeting a couple at a signing after a game in 2013.
So a family friend's grandma was a season ticket holder in 2013 and they had a deal with meeting players and managers after a game. She gave them to that family and one of the girls that was my friend (there were two girls close to my age) went to a concert so they asked me if I wanted to go. I said yes. I ended up meeting players like Drew Stubbs and Justin Masterson and got to meet Terry Francona.
6. My first National League game.
Because I've been following an American League team all of my life, seeing a National League game was a big flip around. When I was in Washington DC with my family the summer before eighth grade, dad found out that the Washington Nationals were in town. So we got to see the Washington Nationals play the Arizona Diamondbacks at Nationals Stadium at Navy Yard. We wore Indians shirts and we weren't judged since there were also people wearing Red Sox, Yankees, and other teams.
7. And my first inter league game.
The inter league is kind of a rare thing to see, but I got to see the Indians play the New York Mets, who was my pop's favorite New York team, in April 2016 and it felt special because not only did we win, but I felt pop was with us watching.
8. 2016 ALDS game one: Cleveland Indians versus Boston Red Sox.
I mean, what other playoff game do you see three home runs in one inning almost back-to-back? Okay sure the Nationals did that the other day but back-to-back-to-back-to-back, but this is playoffs we're talking about.
9. 2016 World Series game one: Cleveland Indians versus Chicago Cubs.
First off, I got to say congratulations to the Cubs for winning the World Series last year. They played a great series and breaking a 108 year dry streak without a championship for the club. My dad even said before game seven that whoever wins, this was the best World Series in history.
But I think out of my 18 or 19 year old life (depending on when this article is published because my birthday is coming up), game one of the 2016 World Series is one of the best games I've been to in ages. Just the atmosphere that the Indians haven't been to a World Series game since 1997 (I wasn't even a thought back then) and to see younger generations of tribe fans seeing this once in a lifetime game is just incredible.
A very big thank you to cousin Joan. You are the best and thanks to you, most of the things on this list wouldn't have happened without you. Seriously.
Anyways, whether or not you're a sports fan, there will always be memories that stick with you. Mine just happened to be associated with baseball.
