9 Things That Are Confusing If You're Not A Sorority Girl

Some things about Greek Life are just confusing if you're not a part of it

9 Things That Are Confusing If You're Not A Sorority Girl

When you attend a college as big as Ohio State, it's hard to avoid the influence of Greek Life. At least one person in all of your classes is involved with it, and you probably have at least one friend who is always wearing her letters or talking about their sisters or inviting you to fundraising events on a daily basis. No matter how many people I know in Greek Life, I will never be prepared or understand Greek Life. There are so many things that are unique to Greek life, and I know that Greek Life isn't for me based on this lack of knowledge.

1. The phrase "Snappy Casual" stresses you out

Snappy casual is synonymous with sorority. I still don't know what snappy casual means. I dress nice but not too nice, and hope that no one comments on it.

2. Recruitment

Why does recruitment take two weeks? What all happens? How do you talk to that many people for so long? I know practically nothing about recruitment, but I feel like if I learned more, it would somehow be more complicated.

3. The Greek alphabet

Trying to talk about Greek Life is hard for me because I don't know how to pronounce the letters, nor do I know what the differences between each sorority are.

4. The houses

Are the rumors of cooks true? I'll never truly know. More importantly, how do you live with that many people? As an introvert, the idea of living with more than 2 people sounds like too much.

5. The outfits for parties

Sororities girls are the only people I know that can find a purpose for nearly every item of clothing they have. Some of the party themes are so specific, the clothes they have will never fit another theme. But they keep them anyway, just in case.

6. Tiering

Some of the sororities are better than others and have different stereotypes, but why this exists or how it's decided will always be a mystery to me.

7. Greek Week

Not only do I never know when this is, this is another one of those events where I don't exactly know what's going on. It happens every year; I see the Snapchats, and the event is no less of a mystery to me.

8. Shirts for every event

If you're in a sorority, odds are you have a shirt for every event, and you'll continue wearing them for years to come. I've seen shirts for move-in day, which isn't even a Greek Life event, but there were still shirts for it. Who decided that is was important to have a shirt for every event?

9. Fraternity and Sorority Relations

There are events where sororities and fraternities pair up. How this happens, I have no clue, or how relations between the sororities and the fraternities are formed.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.

Ever since I could remember, it was a treat to receive Easter Bread made by my grandmother. We would only have it once a year and the wait was excruciating. Now that my grandmother has gotten older, she has stopped baking a lot of her recipes that require a lot of hand usage--her traditional Italian baking means no machines. So for the past few years, I have missed enjoying my Easter Bread.

Top 10 Reasons My School Rocks!

Why I Chose a Small School Over a Big University.

I was asked so many times why I wanted to go to a small school when a big university is so much better. Don't get me wrong, I'm sure a big university is great but I absolutely love going to a small school. I know that I miss out on big sporting events and having people actually know where it is. I can't even count how many times I've been asked where it is and I know they won't know so I just say "somewhere in the middle of Wisconsin." But, I get to know most people at my school and I know my professors very well. Not to mention, being able to walk to the other side of campus in 5 minutes at a casual walking pace. I am so happy I made the decision to go to school where I did. I love my school and these are just a few reasons why.
