I am pretty sure it's safe to say that throughout your academic career you were assigned books that you never read. Sure you read just enough to answer the test questions and pass the class, but you never actually enjoyed those books your teachers deemed "classics". I did the same exact thing - yet I went on to be an English major and published author. As an adult, I can look back at these books with an admiration and knowledge that I did not have when I was a teenager in high school. I see, now, that these books are classics and worth the read -including my personal favorite The Great Gatsby. I wish I appreciated them in high school the way I do now. It's never too late though.
Here is a list of books that you didn't appreciate enough in high school that are definitely worth revisiting:
1. The Great Gatsby
2. Siddhartha
3. Lord of the Flies
4. Literally anything by Shakespeare
5. Animal Farm
7. The Catcher in the Rye
8. The Scarlet Letter
9. 1984
There are so many more than these 9 that I intend on revisiting. Hindsight is 20/20 I suppose. Please, do yourself the favor and read these true classics - as opposed to books the Common Core Standards think you should read.
