I have no shame in admitting that I'm one of those college students completely obsessed with stationary supplies. I have also been through my fair share of backpacks between high school and college. I'm finishing up my second year of college and I think I've finally figured out the necessary backpack essentials for the typical college student. Today I want to share them with you. Obviously, these things could change for you depending on your circumstances, but these are the suggestions I've come up with.

1. Toiletry bag.

I know this seems silly and unnecessary, but you literally never know when you'll need chapstick or a hair tie. I didn't carry one until my sophomore year of college and it's great to have in those in pinch times. In mine, I keep a mini hand sanitizer, mini hairbrush, hair ties, Advil, and some sort of chapstick.

2. Wallet and Keys.

Again, this seems silly to mention because it's fairly obvious, but if you're not already carrying your wallet and keys you need to be! You never know if you're going to be leaving from campus to go somewhere and it's always, always good to have some cash and ID on you.

3. Your textbooks/notebooks for the day.

For me, I'm on campus from the start of my first class until the end of my last; it just works best for me like that. I highly advise you to always carry your textbooks for your classes that day. I know they're heavy and they're a hassle, but they come in handy when you want to work on studying or assignments on campus. You also never want to leave for campus without all your notebooks for the day! Even if you think you won't take notes, bring them, because as I've mentioned, you never know when you'll have time to work.

4. Laptop.

I never, never leave for campus without my laptop. My whole life is essentially on my laptop, so whether I'm dealing with school work or extracurriculars, I have to have it with me.

5. A snack (or some spending money).

If your schedule is like mine and you're on campus most of the day, you will get hungry. And yes there are dining halls, but in my situation, the food is rather crappy there. I always have a snack like granola bars or mixed nuts on me or have some spending money so that I can grab a snack in between classes. We're human, we have to eat.

6. An empty water bottle.

I almost always carry a water bottle with me simply because it encourages me to drink more water. I'm so, SO guilty of drinking Coke all day that by the time I get home for the night I'm super dehydrated; so carrying a water bottle helps at least a little!

7. A planner!

I love my planners and I've been obsessed since high school. I use one that goes by the hour so I can write out my schedule for the day and there's space for little to do lists.

8. Headphones and chargers.

I mean let's be honest, if you're not carrying a phone charger by now are you really doing this right? As a college student, I'm away from my apartment from 9-5:30 some days and you'd be right to say my phone dies.I never leave anywhere without a phone charger and 9/10 times, a laptop charger since I'm constantly doing work.

9. Pens and highlighters.

I personally prefer writing in pen, but basically, you should always carry some kind of writing utensil and highlighters. They are essential to performing well in your lectures.

For those not yet exposed to the wonderful world of college, I hope this eases your mind in what you do and don't need to carry each day. Everyone is different, but this list is pretty general to your typical college student.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.
