There are certain items of clothing or accessories that are iconic and special to the 90’s. When we see or think of them, we lament these trends that met their death with the ushering in of the new millennium. Although we now live in an age sans Butterfly Clips or Manpris (That is, Capris for men…), we can always pay tribute to the fads that helped make the 90’s a decade we’ll always remember.      

1. Chokers

They came in thousands of different styles and colors, and they were all the rage for anyone who was alive in the 90’s. Perhaps the most memorable were the plastic tattoo chokers that came in every color from rainbow to black. These chokers could be seen on about every adolescent girl, and also on pop culture icons in shows such as Sabrina the Teenage Witch and Buffy the Vampire Slayer. 

2. Mood Rings

Remember having a ring that would alert you as to whether you were nervous, calm, angry etc.? Whether it’s because people in the 90’s were never quite sure how they were feeling, or that they were just fun to wear (I think it might be the latter), mood rings were a hot commodity that functioned as a popular conversation starter around the lunch table. 

3. Scrunchies

Scrunchies are another 90’s trend that came in every design imaginable, and represented the ultimate accessory. Scrunchies were popular up into the mid 90’s, and were not only fashion-forward but also functional as a comfortable embellishment for your hair. 

4. Snap Bracelets

Perhaps one of the most entertaining 90’s fads, which also exemplified the epitome of style, were snap bracelets. Snap bracelets were easy to collect and became all the rage throughout the decade, so much so that schools started banning them because they were considered “dangerous.” 

5. Friendship Necklaces 

What goes better with a snap bracelet other than a good friendship necklace? To the average 90’s kid, not much. Girls back in the day loved this trend as one person wore half of the charm, while their BFF would sport the other. But it’s important to remember, while trends may die, at least friendships last a lifetime. 

6.  Denim Overalls

While these aren’t completely foreign in the modern day, they were everything in the 90’s. Loved by children and adults alike, overalls could be seen everywhere, even on your favorite episode of Sister, Sister. People loved to rock full body denim. Although with the ushering in of the 2000’s, it’s possible that the all jean trend began to take it too far (think Justin and Britney in full denim at the 2001 AMA’s). 

7.  Combat boots/Doc Martens

Although combat boots are popular today, Doc Martens are much less present in modern culture. They made for the perfect addition to any 90’s trendsetter, and completed the grungy vibe that characterized teenage angst across the country. 

8. Clueless Inspired Fashion

Clueless was released in 1995, and quickly became a pop culture phenomenon. Thus, 90’s girls were constantly trying to channel Cher’s iconic style with high sock, clogs, and mini skirts.   

While some people might be nothing but happy that these trends have fallen out of fashion, there is no doubt that each 90’s fad played some role in the pop culture that we can’t help but miss just a little…
