There are many controversies when it comes to motorcycles and the people that ride them, but that doesn’t stop the riders from coming out. The weather is getting warmer and my boyfriend has decided to start taking out his bike on rides. It makes me a bit worrisome at times because I know how those who do not ride motorcycles can view them.
May is Motorcycle Safety Awareness Month and it’s pretty important for not only those who ride but also those that share the road with them. Here are some things that everyone should keep in mind when it comes to motorcycles.
1. Motorcycles are small, so look out.
You should be paying attention to your surroundings in the first place, so valuing someone’s life by looking out should not be a problem.
2. Just because the bikes are small doesn’t mean they don’t warrant the same right to the road as you do.
If you’re pulling up to a stoplight, do not pull up next to them in the same lane or invade their space. Motorcycles are vehicles and they do have the right to the road just as much as you do.
3. The bikes are loud, yes.
That’s a safety feature. If you hear them coming, you know they’re there. If you couldn’t hear them, then they would be more at risk then they could possibly already are in.
4. Please make sure you do not stop close behind their bike.
No one enjoys getting hit from behind. It might not cause much damage to your car if you’re hit from behind, but it could cause a lot to their bike and even them. So, give them their distance.
5. They ARE paying attention to you.
Riders don’t just ride without a care in the world, so don’t assume they don’t care. They don’t expect you to be the only one paying attention and taking precautions, they are taking them as well.
6. Not all riders are criminals.
Just because they’re on a motorcycle and dressed in bad boy leather, does not mean they are bad news. Some people just like riding, which leads us to our next point.
7. Motorcycles are freedom.
Most riders ride motorcycles because they feel free when they ride. There aren’t many restraints holding them back. Maybe for some that is there little escape on a hard day. Everyone has something they feel free while doing, and riding could be their thing.
8. They are someone’s loved one.
At the end of the day, that person on the bike means something to someone, just like you do. Do not act foolish or be ignorant risking their life because you aren't paying the same attention to them as you are to others around you. Keep in mind that their life has value as well.
