I was born into a super musical family. My parents know ALL about the benefits of music on children, meaning that before I was even born, they knew they'd expose me to music in every way possible. Music is great and has become a huge passion of mine but being a musician often says a lot about your personality. Growing up with two musical parents definitely came with its share of quirks and something tells me I’m not the only one that experienced them.
1. You play an instrument.
No questions asked, and you probably didn’t have a choice. You were playing an instrument before you could read.
2. ...and were forced to practice.
Once you passed the exciting beginning stages, it was hard to find the initiative to practice. You thought you were too cool and almost quit at least a hundred times, but your parents would nag you to no end (which only made you want to do it less.)
3. When people mention concerts, you think first of classical music.
While your friends may have gone to “normal” concerts, your family valued the classical realm. When you hear “concert," you think about dressing fancy and your favorite symphony orchestras.
4. You care a LOT about details.
Musicians are meticulous. They take great pride in their art and view it as something that reflects them, so they want it to be good. This care for detail often bleeds into other areas of their lives, and if you were raised with this attention to detail, you have no choice but to be detailed as well.
5. Early is on time, on time is late, and late is death.
I’ve never met people who are more serious about being on time than musicians. Growing up, you were probably the first kid at every birthday party, practice, school event, etc. You hated this, but now you’re early to literally everything (which is definitely a good thing.)
6. You go to sporting events for the marching band.
You probably pay more attention to the 10-minute halftime show more than the entirety of the sporting event. Who cares about sports, anyway?
7. You will likely force your children down the same path.
As much as you’ve groaned about practicing and being musical for your entire life, you ultimately see the immense benefits it has brought you. You’ve had no choice but to learn to love everything about it. So now you’ll probably do the same thing to your kids and the cycle will continue forever.
8. You might be kind of a snob.
It’s a known fact that musicians are snobby, whether or not they’re outright about it. You may think that your musical taste is more refined than others. You probably were more musically inclined than your peers growing up, so you’re used to being better in that aspect. It’s okay, it was out of your control - just try to hide it.
