So, Father's Day has come and gone once again. And on we go to our next anticipated holiday – the Fourth of July. Before you go buy your new Goodwill pair of high waisted shorts and a red bandana, there are a few things you might want to consider thanking your dad for.
1. Thank you for always not asking questions even when you have the right to question everything.
Whether it's holding me when I cry, just looking at me when I walk in the door at 3 a.m., or overhearing a phone call of my most recent drama, once I became "legally" an adult, there were no questions. Maybe because you trust me. Or maybe because you don't want to know the answer. Either way, it is highly appreciated and probably saved some really uncomfortable conversations from happening.
2. Thank you for all the things I never notice; taking out the trash, washing the dishes, even taking the dog out.
I didn't even know how good I had it until you weren't around to do these things. Never once did I hear a complaint about them either. You just did it.
3. Thank you for food – I mean, really, thank you for food.
For giving me a $10 when I want to go get dinner with my friends and for grilling more hot dogs, steaks, burgers, and chicken breasts than anyone knew was humanly possible.
4. Thank you for always having a plan of action in any situation.
How to survive family reunions, the first day of school, or job interviews. For always keeping me updated with everyone else in the family's schedules so I know where to be and when to be there. I never have to know what's going on because you do.
5. Thank you for taking pictures even though everyone in the family actually hates it.
As much as I despise the inevitable photos at 5 a.m. on Christmas morning or the horrifying selfies you take while on the (mostly) dreaded hiking trips, I know that I'll have something to laugh about with my children one day and something to look back on to remember those crazy, chaotic family bonding times.
6. Thank you for including me, even when it's last minute or you know I can't go.
When I text you unexpectedly at 7 p.m. on a random Thursday saying, "Oh by the way, I'm 10 minutes from home and I'm staying the night, what's for dinner?" Or when you are planning to take the whole family to the aquarium while you know I have class or work, but you invite me anyway just in case. Or calling me randomly just to check up on my day because you knew I had exams coming up and wanted to see if I was interested in some ice cream.
7. Thank you for loving our family more than you love yourself.
We might not always notice your sacrifices or how hard you work, but we do know you love us and that keeps us going. In fact, it is so clear by your actions that you love us, you don't even have to say it for us to know it and feel it.
8. Thank you for literally always being there for every dumb award and uneventful soccer game.
That one time you gave up your front row Duran Duran tickets to see my solo in my fourth grade chorus concert, or the only time I got on honor roll, and even when I won the "most colorful workout clothes" award for cross country, you were there. For graduation, birthday parties, or parents day at school. You are not only always there, but happy to be there and wouldn't miss it for the world.
9. Thank you for being my superhero.
From changing tires to scaring away unwanted boys, you know how to do it all. And even better you know when to step in. It is never too late or too soon. So, thanks for rescuing me on the side of the interstate when my car breaks down, for coming up with an excuse for me to leave lame social events, and always being on the lookout to swoop me up in the sight of danger when appropriate.
Dad, you are the bomb.com and even though every day isn't Father's Day, I hope that you know I love you the same every day and appreciate all that you do for me, big and small! I do need you (for tuition and food), but more importantly, I want you (because you are you). I love you!
