8 Summer Expectations Vs. Realities For Every College Kid

It's just like Hannah Montana said, "Life's what you make it"

As college students, we really look forward to summer break. We spend a large chunk of our year studying and panicking and studying some more, so when it starts to warm up after a long winter our brains go into overdrive dreaming about the freedom of summer. We build up such large expectations, but many of us get caught up in life and fall short on the summer fun, so I present 8 summer expectations vs. realities.

1. Expectation: Sitting pool-side all day every day

Reality: Laying in bed watching Netflix all day

Sitting at the pool is fun, but watching a 10-hour marathon of tv in the air conditioning is definitely more fun

2. Expectation: Getting a killer tan

Reality: Getting a killer sun burn

I've heard of this mythical "perfect tan" but all I've received is a lobster makeover and peeling skin

3. Expectation: Going on a fun vacation with your pals

Reality: Picking up every extra shift your boss lets you because you're too broke for vaca

You may think you deserve a vacation, but unless you can get an all-expenses-paid trip to the beach for $3, you're SOL.

4. Expectation: Going out with your makeup on fleek

Reality: Your face is literally melting off in the heat

Sure it looks good before you leave the house, but as soon as you step out the door you're suddenly melting like the Wicked Witch of the West

5. Expectation: Waking up early to hike with the sunrise

Reality: Waking up well after noon because you're actually human garbage

Waking up early and being productive always sounds like a good idea until morning rolls around and your bed just won't let you go

6. Expectation: Going to awesome parties 24/7

Reality: Trying to make plans with your friends but they're always busy

Trying to coordinate schedules with more than one other person is nearly impossible, it's hard to have super lit parties when everyone's always working

7. Expectation: Looking super cute in the latest summer fashions

Reality: Hoping your pit sweat marks and flip flop tan lines match your outfit

In this summer heat you pretty much just do what you can and hope for the best *insert shrug*

8. Expectation: Live summer to the fullest

Reality: Waste it on work and counting down to cooler weather

Summer is great, but I'm tired of all the moisture and sunburns. Fall, I'm waiting for you.

For as long as I can remember, I have been listening to The Beatles. Every year, my mom would appropriately blast “Birthday” on anyone’s birthday. I knew all of the words to “Back In The U.S.S.R” by the time I was 5 (Even though I had no idea what or where the U.S.S.R was). I grew up with John, Paul, George, and Ringo instead Justin, JC, Joey, Chris and Lance (I had to google N*SYNC to remember their names). The highlight of my short life was Paul McCartney in concert twice. I’m not someone to “fangirl” but those days I fangirled hard. The music of The Beatles has gotten me through everything. Their songs have brought me more joy, peace, and comfort. I can listen to them in any situation and find what I need. Here are the best lyrics from The Beatles for every and any occasion.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.
