8 Struggles Of Driving With A Nervous Parent

Some parents seem convinced it's our mission to purposely crash the car.

It's quite understandable for a parent to be nervous or scared when teaching their teen how to drive for the first time. However, some parents––you know who you are––never get pass that initial "I just might die today" mentality when driving with their kid. If you're the one with the parents who have a mini meltdown every time you get behind the wheel, whether you're 16 or 26, you'll understand these struggles perfectly.

1. The awkward silence that ensues the minute you start the engine

Now it's time for you to sit in silence and pretend everything is fine until your parent deems a part of your driving unacceptable.

2. When you literally go 5 mph over the speed limit and you can hear their breathing start to hitch

Oh, so they can drive with their knee on the steering wheel and holding a coffee in one hand and it's fine, but they panic when we go 30 mph instead of 25 mph? I see how this is.

3. When you approach a stop sign/stoplight and they start to pump the invisible break

I'm not sure why this is a common theme among parents, but repeatedly stomping on the ground with their foot isn't going to make you start breaking any sooner.

4. And if they don't pump the invisible break, they brace themselves for impact

...And they say we're the dramatic ones.

5. When all their backseat driving starts to take a toll on you

Call me crazy, but for some weird reason, You being stressed out stresses me out

!

6. When they don't get the concept of driver's seat privileges

We love mom and dad, but sometimes we just want to tell them to respect the rules of the road!

7. When everything within eye range can suddenly cause an accident

Yes, mom, I saw the dead bird. Too bad it was on the sidewalk and doesn't have anything to do with my driving!

8. When you finally reach your destination and have to process the trauma of the prior car ride

Good news is, you both made it! Next time, mom drives.

Hopefully with age and a little more trust, mom and dad will ease up in the passenger's seat. Until then, good luck out there to all you young adult drivers!

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.
