Do you ever find yourself connecting more to things of the past?
Maybe the clothing that used to be worn? The music that used to be popular? Or maybe you even prefer television shows or movies from another time.
If this sounds like you, this may be a sign that you were born in the wrong decade.
1. You Watch Movies From Another Decade
In my opinion, most of the best films were made in the 80s. The Breakfast Club, Ferris Bueller's Day Off, Sixteen Candles, Beetlejuice, Pretty in Pink... The list of cinematic glory goes on and on. Nothing beats 80s movies. If you find yourself watching these movies and in turn find that no one understands when you reference them in conversation - except maybe your parents - or they don't understand why your t-shirt says "SAVE FERRIS," I'm sorry to say you are a classic case of being born in the wrong decade.
2. Your Taste In Music
If you're anything like me, you cannot listen to most things on the radio nowadays because to you it's not "real music." I even find myself recognizing fewer and fewer artists names or leaving everyone around me in shock when I don't know a song that apparently has been playing on the hits station for weeks. If this sounds like you, this is probably because you'd much rather listen to the great musicians of the past: Stevie Nicks, The Rolling Stones, The Beatles, and Bob Dylan. You probably feel disappointed in society when people your age don't know how great these people are.
3. Concert T-Shirts
Concert t-shirts have always been popular and still are today. Stores from Forever 21, Urban Outfitters, Charlotte Russe, and more sell vintage-looking concert t-shirts. However, us true fans of artists of the past can actually name more than the most iconic songs of these musicians, and if it doesn't just have their band name plastered on the front, we know what the shirt actually is. One of the best concert tees I've seen has a "girl with kaleidoscope eyes." For those of you who don't know what that means, go look it up and consider yourself officially musically enhanced.
4. You Love Vintage Clothing
You may even find yourself trying to resemble the clothing you've seen in old music videos, on past musicians, or in old movies. You love jeans jackets, leg warmers, scrunchies, high-waisted everything, mock neck sweaters, ringer tees, and anything that screams "I love all things vintage!" I don't get how everyone isn't obsessed with vintage clothing.
5. You Love Anything Retro In Modern Culture
A perfect example of this would be television shows. The wildly popular Netflix series Stranger
6. Most Of Your Favorite Celebrities Are Either Dead Or Pretty Old
You might've laughed when you read this, but I'm actually being serious. It really sucks when a majority of your favorite musicians are either dead, retired, or only come out for very exclusive appearances. Maybe you only see them at reunions and the tickets are probably pretty pricey. You also are more than likely going to have a hard time convincing a friend to go along with, as they'd probably rather see The Weekend, Selena Gomez, or Taylor Swift. It's kind of hard being this young and being a Beatles fan.
Please tell me you at least recognize that incredible guy.
7. Your Room Reflects Your Love Of Another Era
Or maybe just any space that's your own. I named my car Ringo and jam out to Stevie Nicks on my way to work. If you feel as though you belong in another decade, you may have items such as lava lamps (OK who doesn't love lava lamps???), tapestries, records, and posters of some of the great musicians of the past or old movies throughout your room.
8. You Wish You Went To Past Events
Most of these probably have to do with music. Maybe, as I stated earlier, your favorite musician is either dead, no longer performing, or doesn't perform often enough for you to see them. If this is true, it's possible that you have found yourself daydreaming of what it would have been like to go to Woodstock. The musical festival took place in 1969 and drew out a crowd of 40,000 music fans looking to celebrate three days of peace and love with some of the greatest musicians of all time. Performers included Jimi Hendrix and The Who. I've spent much of my life wishing this festival would come back and so would some of the best artists of that era. A girl can dream.
So, I'm here to tell you, don't be ashamed next time you remain silent while the rest of group is rapping Cardi B or singing the new Taylor Swift song. Flip the switch on your lava lamp, throw on your vintage concert tee, put in your headphones, listen to Lennon, and imagine yourself in a better time.
