8 Signs You Grew Up As An Only Child

Maybe it's not as bad as it seems.

It seems as if everyone around you has siblings and you're the only one without a good story to tell involving childhood shenanigans with a brother or sister. Here are eight signs that you grew up as an only child.

1. Sadly, you have selfish tendencies

Although this isn't something to be celebrated, you struggle to offer or share your food/things with other people. When you catch yourself being selfish, you feel terrible and scold yourself.

2. You grew up having an unbreakable bond with your parent(s)

They were the first ones to know about what was happening in your personal life rather than you running off and telling your friends. You knew your parent(s) had their best interest in mind. Also, the focus was on you and not anybody else. Blowing up their phone with texts or calls isn't anything new either.

3. Being alone isn't a burden

In fact, you cherish your alone time. You don't see an issue with going out to eat solo, enjoying a movie by yourself, or spending a night (or two) at home chilling in your pj's.

4. Social settings aren't necessarily your forte

If you are ever out hanging out in public, you know that your extroverted social skills will slowly begin to go downhill, and your awkward nature will reflect. Hey, it's not your fault.

5. Friends become family

Growing up as an only child, you didn't really have anyone to play with or make memories with. Your friends were (or are) the closest thing to a sibling so you always hold them close. The loyalty runs deep.

6. You were taught to be independent at an early age

You couldn't escape the chores that needed to be done around the house, so you had to learn and take on tasks head-on. You were responsible for your own actions and you needed to accept the fact that everybody messes up.

7. Expectations were high

Since you didn't have a sibling, there wasn't anybody you would get compared to. However, having the spotlight on you meant that you had to make yourself and your parents proud. Either a hit or a miss.

8. You are mature

Being around your parents often enough made you acquire an adult mentality from a young age. You often felt left out because, for the most part, you were the voice of reason.

Although there are times when you wish you had a brother or a sister, you are thankful that you can have your alone time and not have anybody eat your snacks!

Ever since I could remember, it was a treat to receive Easter Bread made by my grandmother. We would only have it once a year and the wait was excruciating. Now that my grandmother has gotten older, she has stopped baking a lot of her recipes that require a lot of hand usage--her traditional Italian baking means no machines. So for the past few years, I have missed enjoying my Easter Bread.

I was asked so many times why I wanted to go to a small school when a big university is so much better. Don't get me wrong, I'm sure a big university is great but I absolutely love going to a small school. I know that I miss out on big sporting events and having people actually know where it is. I can't even count how many times I've been asked where it is and I know they won't know so I just say "somewhere in the middle of Wisconsin." But, I get to know most people at my school and I know my professors very well. Not to mention, being able to walk to the other side of campus in 5 minutes at a casual walking pace. I am so happy I made the decision to go to school where I did. I love my school and these are just a few reasons why.
