Congratulations! You’ve finished high school and your first year of college is just around the corner.

The summer before your first semester of college is a transitional period that serves as a great chunk of time to get things done before shipping off to school. You are probably excited and eager to experience the “full freedom” that is college life, yet nervous about starting a whole new chapter in life. It is normal to have mixed feelings. It is okay if you feel overwhelmed! I wanted to offer a few suggestions to be sure to incorporate into your summer plans!

1. Spend more time with your family

These last few months before heading off to school may be your last chance to spend quality time with family for a while, especially if you’re heading far away. Consider setting aside lots of time to hang out with your parents and siblings this summer!

2. Get a summer job

Having the extra cash while in college is very helpful. If you’ll be supporting yourself, books and school supplies can really add up. Also, you just never know when you’ll need to order that late night pizza!

3. Learn how to cook

And not just how to reheat microwave dinners or boil Ramen. Learn how to actually cook food with different ingredients and spices. College is the first step towards living on your own and knowing how to cook is an important part of functioning as an adult. So watch the food channel or arrange food dates with friends, just do what you can to master the elusive art of cooking.

4. Get in shape

You will live a longer, happier life if you eat the right food and get healthy. Plus, exercise is a great way to relax, clear your head and refocus. Whether it’s yoga, interval training or dancing, get out and do something. You will thank yourself in the future.

5. Find (and get to know) your roommate

Since many colleges require incoming freshmen to live in dorms, chances are high you’re going to have a roommate and it’s likely the first time you’ll be sharing your living space with someone outside your family.

6. Try new things

Do something you’ve been putting off all school year because you were too busy to do it. Whether you wanted to start doing yoga or reading a book someone recommended to you, this summer is your chance to make time for the things you’ve been wanting to accomplish.

7. Research clubs and organizations offered by your school

Be prepare to get involved! One thing that a lot of college grads express regret over is not being involved on campus. Joining clubs and organizations is a great way to make friends and build professional relationships.

8. Travel! Travel! Travel!

Yes, it sounds cliche, but even if you do not have the opportunity to go somewhere far, adventure to somewhere new near your hometown. Maybe you can try a nearby park for a picnic lunch with friends or a spot to watch the sunset.

Make the most of it and enjoy every moment. This summer will probably feel like it went by faster than most. Your first day of class will be here before you know it. Don’t always sit in your room watching Netflix—you will have time for that once college comes. Spend your free time doing the things that mean the most to you.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.

Ever since I could remember, it was a treat to receive Easter Bread made by my grandmother. We would only have it once a year and the wait was excruciating. Now that my grandmother has gotten older, she has stopped baking a lot of her recipes that require a lot of hand usage--her traditional Italian baking means no machines. So for the past few years, I have missed enjoying my Easter Bread.

Top 10 Reasons My School Rocks!

Why I Chose a Small School Over a Big University.

I was asked so many times why I wanted to go to a small school when a big university is so much better. Don't get me wrong, I'm sure a big university is great but I absolutely love going to a small school. I know that I miss out on big sporting events and having people actually know where it is. I can't even count how many times I've been asked where it is and I know they won't know so I just say "somewhere in the middle of Wisconsin." But, I get to know most people at my school and I know my professors very well. Not to mention, being able to walk to the other side of campus in 5 minutes at a casual walking pace. I am so happy I made the decision to go to school where I did. I love my school and these are just a few reasons why.
