8 Basic Things I Can't Wait To Do In The Fall
Emily Washbourn

While everyone has their own opinions, I believe that Fall is one of the greatest times of the year. September, October and November offer a variety of perks that other months just cannot compete with. After a long and hot summer, there is nothing more refreshing like the fresh start that Fall offers each and every year. Here are eight reasons why I love the Fall and you should too!

1. Shorts-and-a-Sweatshirt Weather

This seems weird but really... what other time of year can you be comfortable in just shorts and a sweatshirt or jeans and a t-shirt? Maybe the Spring, but it just isn't the same. After not being able to wear your favorite sweater or sweatshirt all summer, you finally have the chance to once it starts getting a little chilly! Fall is all about being comfortable and cute. So tell me, is there anything better than that?

2. The Trees

While the leaves may be dying, at least they look beautiful! The bright reds, oranges and yellows that shine through are seriously breathtaking and make for great fall foliage photos!

3. Birthdays!

Okay maybe not everyone has a birthday in the Fall, but I do!! Every year I get to celebrate my birthday in the beautiful month of October, and while it wasn't really my choice that this happened, I am so thankful that it did. My favorite time of year + my birthday = a great time, and I'm sure all Fall babies would agree!

4. Apple Picking

There is nothing better than fresh apples picked by your own two hands. I love walking up and down the rows of apple trees with my family, seeing who can find the biggest and best apples. But don't forget about the Apple Cider Donuts! They are the sweet treat at the end of a day of apple picking.

5. Halloween

The one and only time of the year that you can dress up as someone else and ask people for candy and not seem weird! No matter how old you are, Halloween is an exciting part of the year and a pivotal point of Fall. It basically celebrates making it 2/3 of the way through the season and rewards you in free candy.

6. Pumpkin Spice EVERYTHING

Yes, I am basic and no, I don't care. I love pumpkin spice and, honestly, it is probably one of the top reasons why Fall is my favorite. Cookies, pumpkin bread, coffee, you name it! A pumpkin spice latte from Starbucks is always my go-to drink and I never pass up an opportunity to grab one. Almost every coffee place, or at least the chains, have their own version of pumpkin spice, so try them all and choose your favorite!

7. Football

Sunday Night Football is always a big event in my house. While I do have a favorite team (Go Giants!), it was more about the time spent with my family than football. My mom would make a ton of appetizers for dinner and my whole family would sit around and cheer on whoever was playing, having a nice moment before the week started back up again.

8. Thanksgiving

This Fall festivity doesn't just offer up amazing food, but also some quality family time. You get a break from school and work to really reflect on your year and what matters to you most. Sharing a delicious meal with great company to mark the end of the Fall season is definitely something to be thankful for.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.

Ever since I could remember, it was a treat to receive Easter Bread made by my grandmother. We would only have it once a year and the wait was excruciating. Now that my grandmother has gotten older, she has stopped baking a lot of her recipes that require a lot of hand usage--her traditional Italian baking means no machines. So for the past few years, I have missed enjoying my Easter Bread.

I was asked so many times why I wanted to go to a small school when a big university is so much better. Don't get me wrong, I'm sure a big university is great but I absolutely love going to a small school. I know that I miss out on big sporting events and having people actually know where it is. I can't even count how many times I've been asked where it is and I know they won't know so I just say "somewhere in the middle of Wisconsin." But, I get to know most people at my school and I know my professors very well. Not to mention, being able to walk to the other side of campus in 5 minutes at a casual walking pace. I am so happy I made the decision to go to school where I did. I love my school and these are just a few reasons why.
