8 Questions Every College Student Will Be Asked When They Go Home For Break

I think it is safe to say that everyone gets excited to go home for break.

Finally getting a home cooked meal, getting to spend time with those incredibly important friends that you have not seen since the summer, getting to sleep in your own bed, and most importantly- getting a much needed break from school. HOWEVER, the questions every college student gets asked the second they set foot in their home town is not something to cause excitement. If anything, it can be a real compelling reason NOT to go home. And what makes the situation even worse, these questions are asked every single time you go home and by multiple people - mom, dad, aunts, uncles, and even your grandparents.

The list of questions compiled below are just some of the ones I tend to ALWAYS get asked when I go home and these are the answers I wish I could tell them but instead decide against it.

1. Do you have a boyfriend/girlfriend yet?

Nope. And I don't need one, thank you. This particular question gets asked by the grandparents more often than not because they're "getting old and want to see you have children before they die." But honestly, I am just focused on trying to get through the semester without completely losing my mind.

2. Are you at least interested in anyone?

Again, see above response. Everyone sucks. That will probably make me sound super bitter, but I promise- I am not. So please, PLEASE, stop asking me.

3. How are your professors?

Honestly, I wouldn't know. I haven't gone to class in maybe three weeks. Give or take. They all seem really nice though.

4. Are you doing good in your classes?

I am too scared to even look at my grades, so please don't ask. And please don't make me check. I'll probably have a heart attack and give you a stroke.

5. Have you changed your major yet?

I changed it about five times since I started school. But I won't say that because that will just bring on an entirely new list of questions that, much like the others, I don't want to answer.

6. Do you even know what you want to do with your life after graduation?

No. I don't. I have not one single clue. And thinking about it gives me anxiety. But yes, I am very aware that Graduation is not so far away at this point and I'm going to have to figure it out sometime soon.

7. Is this even a real school???

Of course it is. It most definitely is not a school I made up to get away from home. I promise. I would not risk being in debt for the rest of my life for a fake school in probably the hottest state known to man.

8. Why don't you just come home already?

Because I am not ready. And I don't want to deal with the rest of the questions that will be asked if and when I do decide to come home.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.

Ever since I could remember, it was a treat to receive Easter Bread made by my grandmother. We would only have it once a year and the wait was excruciating. Now that my grandmother has gotten older, she has stopped baking a lot of her recipes that require a lot of hand usage--her traditional Italian baking means no machines. So for the past few years, I have missed enjoying my Easter Bread.
