Ah, Thanksgiving. That wonderful time of year when college students get to go home and eat non-campus, non-take-out, home-cooked dinner... with a side of blazing questions asked by every member of the family. Here are just a few of the questions every college student hears when they go home for the holidays.
1. How's your love life?
Ugh, do we have to talk about this? This question can be phrased as "How's so-and-so?" or "Why don't you have a boyfriend/girlfriend yet?" No matter how it's asked, it's a question every single college student dreads around the dinner table.
2. How are your grades?
We try to answer this with a quiet "good" and then a forkful of food. Nobody likes talking about their grades, especially this time of year. We're stressed about our upcoming finals, the LAST thing we want to talk about is our grades.
3. Are you working out?
You desperately try to make do with this question by saying "I go to Zumba" or "I take the stairs everywhere," but the real answer is no, no you do not work out. If you are a college student who works out, God bless you.
4. Do you have a 5 year plan?
Please, I don't have a next week plan. College is one of those things you take week by week. During especially stressful weeks, you take it day by day. There's the occasional student who has the next 5 years planned out, but I've found that most of those people plan on going to medical school.
5. How are your roommates?
Either "They're good" and a passing of the mashed potatoes or simply pretending you didn't hear them because that is not an can of worms they want to open. Roommate situations can be tricky and you don't really want to dump all that drama on your family who was just being polite.
6. Do you have any internships lined up?
As a matter of fact, I do! You feel super successful when you are finally able to truthfully produce the answer everyone wants to hear from you. Plus you're finally the center of attention for something good- Score!
7. Why do you work so much?
To pay for this blessed thing we call "college," that is why I work so much. College is expensive (What? When? What? No!") and I am trying to graduate with as little student debt as possible.
8. What do you plan to do after graduation?
This is pretty similar to the 5 year plan question, but it's different enough that I thought I'd mention it. I don't know what I'm doing after graduation! I don't even know what I'm having for breakfast tomorrow! At this point in our lives, we've learned that life is unpredictable. We can map out and plan our lives as much as we want, but that doesn't mean any of it is necessarily going to happen. For many students, there are several different paths for after graduation. We don't know where the wind will blow us, but we've learned to just go with it.
