Diabetics have it rough sometimes, I mean, it isn't exactly ideal to lug around thousands of juice boxes wherever you go. Here are eight problems only diabetics will understand.
1. Forgetting Your Insulin
There really is nothing worse than sitting down at a restaurant with your friends, ordering a delicious meal, and then discovering you don't have your insulin. Salad just isn't as satisfying when everyone else is eating loads of bread.
2. Forgetting Fast Acting Sugar
Sometimes, it really just is impossible to remember to replenish the juice box stash you keep hoarded away in your purse or backpack. Fortunately, years of forgetting juice boxes has blessed me with the incredible skill of being able to locate a soda machine in virtually any situation.
3. Giving Up On Your Workout
Forget the fact that you got dressed, drove to the gym, and ate a pre-gym snack. If your blood sugar is slightly off, a typical workout can feel similar to a climb up Mount Everest (without oxygen, of course.)
4. Having Nightmares About Blood Sugar Readings
I can't be the only person who has a recurring nightmare about dealing with deathly low blood sugar while trying to shop during a Black Friday sale. The only thing worse than that is actually going low during a Black Friday sale.
5. Super Human Taste Bud Powers
We should be in a soda tasting competition to identify diet and regular soda from one another. And any diabetic would win said competition. You can't get a drop of regular soda past these lips! At least, not without an insulin injection.
6. Trails of Test Strips
Diabetics typical test their blood sugar levels anywhere from 4-6 times per day (and in some cases, more than that!) and every time we test, we have to use a tiny blue strip called a test strip. All of this testing means that there are literally trails of these blue strips anywhere I've ever been. It doesn't matter how consistently you vacuum them up and it doesn't matter if you throw them away right after they've been used. They. Will. Be. Found. Everywhere. There's nothing quite like discovering a test strip stuck to your stomach on a hot day. It's even better when you have no idea how it got there...
7. No Backpack is Big Enough
To avoid catastrophes like forgotten insulin and low blood sugar levels, we have to carry around quite the arsenal of supplies. Even our supplies have supplies!
8. The Word 'Hangry' Was Created For Us
Seriously. There's nothing quite like a diabetic who hasn't eaten in a few hours. It doesn't matter what it is, any kind of food will do, just get me a snack.
