After the rush of high school graduation came to a close and I said farewell to some of my best friends, my future finally became a reality: moving off to college. I had a whirlwind of emotions— happy, sad, scared, nervous etc.— but knew there were so many great things ahead. As a child, I had visited the Twin Cities a number of times and remember seeing that great skyline in the distance as we neared the big city. I couldn't wait to finally call this place my home. I have learned so many new things since arriving in this city, as opposed to growing up in a small town, and can't wait to spend my life in such a welcoming and exciting place.
Now, two years later, I have learned some valuable life lessons from these great cities that I want to share!
1. The skyline truly never gets old.
You'd think after seeing the Minneapolis skyline every single day that it would get tiring, but it never does. You get to see it in fog, sunshine, darkness etc. and that makes it exciting every day.
2. There is always a new place to explore.
If you think you have seen the whole city, you truly haven't. Everywhere you look there is a new sight or aspect to explore.
3. Parking sucks.
I've learned that if I want to go somewhere in the city, I better be ready to pay at least $10 to park. Whether you're in Dinkytown or downtown, it'll always be a struggle. And be careful to double check the signs because they aren't afraid to tow here.
4. Strangers can become your friends.
"Minnesota Nice" is truly a thing. You can simply meet a stranger on the street and know their whole life story within minutes.
5. Public transportation is a must.
Before moving to the cities, I had never used the light rail. Now, it is an essential to living in the city. Uber is also a life saver. If you're ever in a pinch to get somewhere quick, an Uber will save your life.
6. Don't be afraid to try new food.
There are so many new restaurants in the Twin Cities that I've tried since moving here. Sushi has become my new favorite food but before moving to the cities, I had never even tried it. Thai food, Chinese food, and more are all an option in the cities and can be a fun date/dinner option!
7. Winter's are still bad, but not that bad.
Everyone knows that Minnesota winters are by far the worst. In the Twin Cities, the temperature often drops down to the negatives and the roads are very icy to drive on. On the flip side, the winters in the cities are so lively and exciting. Ice sculptures, winter parades, and the Holidazzle celebration are all fun events to try.
8. I am excited to call this my forever home.
I love the big city and am so excited to spend my life here. I am so happy I moved to the cities for college and have learned so many new things about myself in the process!
