No genre of film is more underrated and discarded than romantic comedies. Everyone is ready to act like there's nothing fun about a good romantic comedy, but I disagree. As a lover of all movies, I feel like the romantic comedy is often underrated and just because something is a romantic comedy doesn't mean it's a "chick flick," a great romantic comedy can appeal to anyone. So, I've created a small list of eight awesome romantic comedies that I think everyone would enjoy.
When Harry Met Sally (1989)- In my personal favorite rom com, Harry and Sally try to figure out if men and women really are capable of just being friends. The chemistry between Meg Ryan and Billy Crystal is indisputable in this film, and this movie is one of the best examples of how important good, witty dialogue can be to a film. It explores humor and the differing views of men and women, while also containing a multitude of unforgettable scenes. You'll fall in love with this classic after the first 15 minutes.
Pretty Woman (1990)- Yes, we could easily focus on the absurdity and unconventionality of this film, but this movie really has a charm all its own. The characters are well constructed and make up the perfect pair. Neither of the characters in this story enter it looking to find love, yet they do anyway. He introduces her to a life of luxury and she shows him what it's like to relax from time to time.
Groundhog Day (1993)- Bill Murray is a great comedic actor, who, at his best, balances perfectly on the line of great comedy and raw emotion and in this movie, he balances on that line. He manages to capture and sell the ridiculousness of his character and the situation his character is in, while also capturing the very real feelings of his characters, feelings most of us would have in his situation.
The Princess Bride (1987)- I have yet to meet someone who doesn't enjoy The Princess Bride. Not only does this movie have some of the best supporting characters ever, but it overflows with humor and great personalities. This movie could only be about Fezzik, Inigo and Vizzini, and it would still be great. However, lucky for us, we get those three and more. Nothing will stop Westley from getting to the woman he loves, not death machines, rodents of unusual size, or even a battle of wits.
(500) Days of Summer (2009)- Not all relationships are meant to last forever, sometimes relationships end and leave people a complete mess struggling to come to terms with what they lost. As it says in the beginning, (500) Days of Summer isn't your traditional love story. If it was a happier film, we'd probably see Tom and Summer meet, fall in love, accept their differences, and eventually end up together, but this m ovie didn't want to be traditional. It's a love story that doesn't end with happily ever after, but it gives you the hope that you'll move on anyway.
50 First Dates (2004)- Okay, so the basic idea of this movie is a little sad, but it's also tied in with the comedy of it. When we meet Henry, he's a guy who likes to romance tourists and then send them packing, Lucy is a sweet former teacher with short term memory. Henry sets his heart on winning over Lucy, but due to her brain damage, she can't remember anything from the day before, so every morning, Henry has won her over again.
This Means War (2012)- CIA spies, FDR and Tuck are inseparable best friends and partners, but their long-time bond is put to the test when they meet Lauren. When they both fall for the same woman, they turn their skills against each other. This movie has a lot going for it: comedy, Chris Pine, action, romance, and did I mention Chris Pine?
The Proposal (2009)- Margaret insists that her employee, Andrew, marry her so she can avoid getting deported to Canada. However, things take an unexpected turn for the two when they have to go to Alaska to meet his family. Romance, raunchy grandmothers, outrageous characters, daddy issues, this movie has it all.
